About the Location

Overview

Found in Westminster, Colorado, Carroll Butts Park spans 32 acres co-owned by the City of Westminster and the Hyland Hills Park & Recreation District. The park houses both the Hyland Hills Sports Center and the Carroll Butts Aquatic Center, offering indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family.

Sports Galore

If you're the active type, you'll appreciate the park's impressive sports lineup. Four well-kept baseball/softball fields regularly host youth leagues and tournaments (including the Colorado Sparkler Tournament). Beyond baseball, you'll discover football/soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, and the freshly added outdoor pickleball courts that have quickly become a local favorite.

Make a Splash

The Carroll Butts Aquatic Center is a summer hotspot featuring a refreshing swimming pool and playful splash pad. On warm days, you can cool off in the water, and swimming lessons are available for kids of all ages. The pool area is one of the park's most popular features.

Play Paradise

Little ones have two distinct playgrounds to explore. Behind the tennis courts on the north end, you'll come across a special area designed just for younger children. The main playground offers separate zones for both older and younger kids, complete with swings (including baby swings) and a sandy play area. Both playgrounds maintain high safety standards while delivering hours of entertainment.

Gather & Celebrate

Planning a get-together? The park features three covered pavilions that you can reserve for parties and events. Reservations are clearly posted to prevent scheduling conflicts. You'll also find plenty of picnic tables across the grounds, with particularly scenic seating near the water. The clean, spacious pavilions make perfect venues for birthday celebrations and family reunions.

Natural Beauty

At the heart of Carroll Butts Park lies a charming pond with an artificial island you can reach via a footbridge. The water attracts a variety of birds - ducks, geese, pelicans, loons, and elegant egrets all make appearances. A leisurely 10-minute walking path circles the pond, offering beautiful mountain views. Take a moment to relax in one of the swinging chairs that fit up to four people - they're excellent for soaking in the peaceful atmosphere.

Leisure Time

Sometimes you just need to unwind, and the park delivers with plenty of green spaces, shade trees, and comfortable benches. Dog owners often bring their furry friends for walks, creating a friendly community vibe. The grounds stay remarkably clean and well-maintained, making them ideal for casual strolls, morning jogs, or simply sitting back and connecting with nature. Many locals appreciate that it's typically less crowded than other nearby parks.

Facilities

When nature calls, restrooms are available at the sports center and pool during operating hours. You'll also find public restrooms on the north end of the park, though note that these might close during winter months. Near the softball fields, portable toilets provide additional options, however during busy sporting events, you might encounter short lines.

Fresh Updates

As of October 2023, Carroll Butts Park is undergoing thoughtful improvements as part of a master plan created by Hyland Hills and the City of Westminster. Many of the original amenities had reached the end of their intended lifespan, so the park is being revitalized in phases. The first round of enhancements includes expanded parking, those popular new pickleball courts, and improved drainage systems.

Beyond the Boundaries

For those who love longer adventures, the park connects to the regional trail system via the Farmer's High Line Canal, opening up miles of exploration possibilities. With its mix of active recreation spaces and tranquil natural areas - plus those gorgeous mountain views - Carroll Butts Park has become a treasured resource for Westminster residents.

Many locals enjoy the park for its balance of recreation and relaxation spaces.
