About the Location
Historical Development
Seaside Park was established in the 1860s and designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the same landscape architects responsible for New York's Central Park.
The park's history is closely tied to P.T. Barnum, Bridgeport's famous resident and circus impresario, who was instrumental in its creation and development. Originally consisting of pasture land, wood lots, and salt marshes, the area was transformed into America's first seaside "rural" park through Barnum's vision and the efforts of other prominent citizens.
Landscape and Features
Spanning 325 acres along Long Island Sound, Seaside Park offers 2.5 miles of waterfront with beaches, lawns, and recreational areas.
The park features a varied landscape, including lush lawns, shady groves, sports fields, and a long stretch of sandy beach. The eastern section of the park, part of the original Olmsted design, has a more wooded character with winding roads and paths.
The western areas, added later through land reclamation, offer a more open, expansive feel.
Notable Attractions
At the park's western end lies Fayerweather Island, a natural wildlife preserve accessible by a stone breakwater. The island is home to the Black Rock Harbor Light, which guided ships from 1823 to 1932.
Throughout the park, visitors will find various monuments and statues, including those dedicated to soldiers and sailors, Elias Howe (inventor of the sewing machine), and P.T. Barnum himself. The Perry Memorial Arch, added in 1918, serves as a prominent landmark and symbol of the park.
Recognition and Community Value
Seaside Park continues to be a vital part of Bridgeport's community, offering residents and visitors alike a place for recreation, relaxation, and connection with nature.
Its historical significance and natural beauty have earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places.
