About the Location
Historic Estate
Tucked between New Haven and Hamden, Edgerton Park spreads across 25 acres of green serenity. This wasn't always a public space, but back in 1906, a wealthy industrialist named Frederick F. Brewster claimed this land as his own private retreat.
Brewster went all out and built a Tudor-style mansion called "Edgerton" on the grounds. Completed in 1909, it wasn't just any home - it was actually a wedding gift for his wife Margaret. Talk about a present! The surrounding landscape was designed by Robert Storer Stephenson, who channeled the elegant simplicity of 18th century English gardens with their thoughtful blend of natural beauty and carefully crafted views.
Legacy and Preservation
After Margaret passed away, the estate found its way into the hands of New Haven in 1965, just as Frederick had specified in his will. The mansion itself didn't survive (again, per Brewster's instructions), but many original structures still stand as reminders of the park's storied past.
The park isn't just pretty - it's historically significant. It's earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. When you visit, you'll still find the original stone wall encircling the property, along with charming greenhouses, a carriage house, gatehouse, and a picturesque stone bridge arching over a small ravine.
Features and Attractions
Near the main entrance, you'll come across the Brewster Fountain, built in 1991 on the site of the original. It's a lovely focal point overlooking a spacious field that functions as the park's central gathering space.
Plant lovers shouldn't miss the four greenhouses and the Sarah T. Crosby Conservatory. Inside, you'll find yourself surrounded by plants from across the globe, including a lush rainforest exhibit. It offers respite, especially during Connecticut winters, and plants are available for purchase if you're interested.
The community gardens add a special touch to Edgerton. Local gardeners rent plots to grow everything from practical vegetables to gorgeous flowers. During growing season, these gardens transform into a colorful patchwork that's worth wandering through just to admire the variety - the dahlias, when in bloom, are particularly stunning.
Landscape and Recreation
The character of Edgerton comes from its old-growth trees and well-maintained shrubs that create a peaceful atmosphere. There's something timeless about the place that echoes its English garden inspiration. The open valley area provides an ideal spot for flying kites on breezy days or playing fetch with your four-legged friend.
You'll come across plenty of benches scattered across the grounds - great for taking a moment to read, people-watch, or simply enjoy the surroundings. The winding paths invite unhurried exploration no matter the season, with each turn offering a different view or quiet corner to discover.
Community Use
Today, Edgerton Park serves many purposes, including hosting summer performances by the Elm Shakespeare Company in the park's natural amphitheater setting.
Throughout the year, the park welcomes community gatherings ranging from educational workshops to festivals and forums. It's also become something of a favorite backdrop for photographers - if you visit during prom season, you'll likely spot teens in formal wear posing for pictures.
Dog owners, you're in luck - the park is pet-friendly, but your companions should stay leashed. And yes, there are restrooms available near the community garden greenhouses, so you can comfortably spend hours exploring.
The park is managed through a partnership between New Haven and the Edgerton Park Conservancy, a non-profit that maintains the space and organizes community events.
