About the Location
History and Namesake
If you're strolling through what locals once called Southfield Park, you're actually walking on grounds renamed in 2011 to honor a true community stalwart. John Boccuzzi wasn't just any resident - he was a Waterside local through and through who dedicated over 40 years to serving on the Board of Representatives.
Born and raised in Waterside, Boccuzzi graduated from Stamford High School in 1941 before joining the U.S. Army's 44th tank battalion during World War II, bringing his hometown values to the global stage.
Park Features
Spread across 12 acres of prime coastal real estate in Stamford's Waterside neighborhood, this haven gives you front-row access to the majestic Long Island Sound while offering plenty of ways to play and unwind.
Feel like getting some sand between your toes? There's a nice stretch of beach about a quarter-mile long - great for laying out a towel and soaking up some sunshine.
Active types will appreciate the well-maintained tennis courts and basketball court, while softball enthusiasts can take advantage of the dedicated softball field. Families haven't been forgotten either - the playground features quality jungle gym equipment that keeps the little ones entertained for hours.
The harborside boardwalk connecting to the park makes for a peaceful stroll with water views that remind you why Connecticut's coastline is so special. The gentle walking trails are ideal for both your daily constitutional and walking your four-legged friends while enjoying the scenic backdrop.
Marina and Water Access
Bringing your kayak or small boat? You're in luck. The park offers convenient water access with parking spots close to the water's edge, making it easy to launch your vessel without the hassle.
The recently built SoundWaters marina building has become a welcome addition to the shoreline, enhancing both the functionality and charm of the waterfront area.
Recent Developments
The park hasn't been standing still. In recent years, the city has been rolling up its sleeves, putting genuine effort into renovations and ongoing maintenance to keep everything in top shape.
2024 marked the beginning of a major overhaul, with the city already investing more than $3 million on the first phase of improvements. The upgrades haven't gone unnoticed, with neighbors frequently commenting on the positive changes around the park.
Environmental Education
If you're interested in marine education, you'll be happy to know that SoundWaters, a respected environmental education organization, holds a long-term lease with exclusive rights to the marina. Their vision includes plans for a permanent facility with classroom space and additional amenities.
They're not just about buildings, though. SoundWaters actively engages local youth through enriching educational programs, including popular sailing lessons and summer camps that make the most of this beautiful waterfront setting.
