About the Location

History and Development

Situated in the Eckington neighborhood of Washington, D.C., Alethia Tanner Park is a 2.5-acre green haven that opened its gates in June 2020. Just north of New York Avenue NE, this green space was created by the NoMa Parks Foundation as part of their initiative to develop more public parks in the neighborhood.

The park bears the name of Alethia Tanner, a significant African American leader who made her mark in early 19th century Washington D.C. The site has undergone a remarkable transformation - from a vacant lot and former rail yard into a community space that references its industrial history while providing various modern amenities.

Features and Amenities

At the heart of the park lies an inviting green lawn that functions as a natural gathering spot. During summer months, the lawn hosts outdoor movie screenings and concerts. It also hosts a weekly farmers market every Thursday, offering fresh produce and artisanal goods.

Around this central area, you can find more active zones including a well-designed playground for children. The play area features climbing structures, ropes, slides, and mirrors, all set on a padded surface for safety. While it accommodates kids of various ages, do note that there aren't any swings available.

Four-legged friends haven't been forgotten - the dedicated dog park offers plenty of room for pets to run around and make new companions. Water fountains are scattered throughout the grounds for both human and canine visitors, but they occasionally might be out of service.

Large picnic tables provide comfortable spots to enjoy a meal or simply sit and watch the world go by. One small drawback: some areas could use more shade, especially during DC's warmer months.

Trails and Connectivity

One of the park's best features is its connection to the Metropolitan Branch Trail, making it easily accessible for cyclists and pedestrians. This integration has turned the park into a popular spot for runners, walkers, and bikers passing through the area.

There's something uniquely urban about watching elevated trains pass by while you're relaxing in the park - a gentle reminder of the city's pulse and your connection to the broader transportation network.

Environmental Considerations

The creation of this park wasn't just about adding green space - it was also an exercise in environmental restoration. Due to its industrial past, the site required significant soil remediation, combining traditional soil replacement with innovative phytoremediation techniques.

A thoughtfully planted meadow continues this remediation work, with specific flora chosen to help cleanse soil contaminants while enhancing the local ecosystem. It's a beautiful example of how urban planning can address environmental challenges.

Art and Culture

If you're an art lover, you'll appreciate the park's vibrant murals and street art that refresh annually. These colorful expressions have become a signature element, drawing visitors and establishing the park as a cultural landmark within the neighborhood.

Community Space

Alethia Tanner Park functions as a multifunctional community space. Whether you're looking for a quiet spot to read, an area for recreation, or a place to connect with neighbors, the park accommodates these different uses.

The warmer months bring a calendar full of community events - movie nights under the stars, live concerts, fall festivals, and cultural celebrations like Art All Night. These events help bring together local residents and visitors throughout the year.

Facilities

When nature calls, the park offers outdoor restrooms that operate through a smart system called "The Throne." You'll need to text a phone number to unlock the door - a modern solution, but you might encounter issues with non-iPhone devices, and be aware that hours may be limited during special events.

A spacious pavilion provides shelter for community gatherings year-round, offering protection from both summer sun and unexpected showers.
