About the Location
A Stroll Through America's Front Yard
Set in the heart of Washington, D.C., the National Mall stretches over 2 miles from the Lincoln Memorial on the west to the U.S. Capitol on the east. Often called "America's front yard," this sprawling 309.2-acre green space is actually America's most-visited national park.
The Mall's story begins in 1791, part of Pierre L'Enfant's original vision for the capital city. What we see today took shape largely through the McMillan Plan of 1901-1902, transforming the space into the iconic landmark we now know.

Monuments That Tell America's Story
Walking the Mall feels like flipping through chapters of American history. The towering Washington Monument stands at its center, while the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and Korean War Veterans Memorial offer powerful spaces for reflection on those who served.
The Lincoln Memorial is particularly moving - there's something about sitting on those steps at dusk that puts life in perspective. If you're into hidden details, look for the famous typo where "FUTURE" was mistakenly carved as "EUTURE" in one of the inscriptions. These little quirks add character to these monumental spaces.

Museums That Won't Cost You a Dime
Lining this green corridor are some of the world's finest museums - and the best part? Most won't cost you a penny to enter. The Smithsonian Museums offer everything from dinosaur bones to space shuttles. The National Museum of African American History and Culture offers a particularly powerful experience.

More Than a Park
The Mall serves multiple roles in American life: it's where we learn about our shared heritage, exercise our First Amendment rights, witness presidential inaugurations, and sometimes just throw a frisbee around on a sunny day.

Nature in the City
Amid the marble monuments, you'll find over 9,000 trees, including nearly 2,300 graceful American elm trees that provide welcome shade in summer. With more than 26 miles of pedestrian paths and 8 miles of bike trails, there's plenty of room to move.
The Mall's wide-open spaces make it excellent for a morning jog or evening stroll. Many visitors opt to rent bikes or electric scooters to cover the considerable ground between sights. If you can time your visit for sunset, you're in for a treat - the monuments take on a golden glow that's worth the wait.

Planning Your Visit
The Mall never closes, so you're welcome to visit at 5 AM or midnight if that suits your fancy. Restrooms are available throughout, but they can be a 10-15 minute walk apart. Water fountains are scattered around too, which you'll appreciate during D.C.'s humid summers.
You should plan for at least a full day to explore properly. If you're short on time, guided tours or hop-on-hop-off buses can give you the highlights. During summer, bring plenty of water and sun protection - the shade can be scarce in some sections, and the D.C. heat is no joke.

A Living Symbol
Every year, the National Park Service processes over 6,000 permit applications for gatherings on the Mall - from protests to celebrations to concerts. This isn't just a park; it's America's communal living room, a stage for national conversations, and a canvas where we continue to reimagine what our democracy means.
The National Mall continues to evolve, recognizing our complicated heritage while providing a space for gathering, remembrance, and celebration.
