About the Location

Historic Significance

The National Mall is a historic and iconic park located in the heart of Washington, D.C. Stretching over 2 miles from the Lincoln Memorial on the west end to the U.S. Capitol on the east end, it serves as America's most-visited national park and is often referred to as "America's front yard."

This expansive green space encompasses approximately 309.2 acres between the Capitol steps and the Lincoln Memorial. The Mall's history dates back to 1791 when it was conceived as part of Pierre L'Enfant's original plan for the city of Washington. It has since evolved through various developments, including the McMillan Plan of 1901-1902, which established much of its current layout.
