About the Location
Historic Significance
Nestled directly south of the White House sits President's Park South, but most people know it simply as The Ellipse. This 52-acre oval-shaped green space offers a close-up view of the White House's south lawn and portico.
The Ellipse has been part of Washington's DNA since 1791 when Pierre Charles L'Enfant included it in his original city plans. If these grounds could talk, they'd have some stories to tell. During the Civil War, this pristine park was actually packed with horses, cattle, and Union soldiers camping between battles.
It's hard to believe now, but this scenic area was once used as a city dump before its late 19th century transformation. Today, this area has been transformed into one of the capital's ceremonial spaces.

Monuments and Memorials
As you wander through the grounds, you'll encounter several meaningful monuments. There's the Zero Milestone, a humble marker that is the official starting point for measuring highway distances from DC - think of it as America's road trip odometer reset button.
You'll also find the Second Division Memorial honoring soldiers who fell in various conflicts. Perhaps most famously, the Ellipse is home to the National Christmas Tree, a tradition that's been brightening Washington winters since 1923.
Events and Activities
The Ellipse hosts various activities throughout the year. From concerts to demonstrations and recreational gatherings, there's often something happening on these historic grounds.
During the holiday season, the National Christmas Tree lighting is a popular attraction. A particularly charming feature is the collection of state and territory trees surrounding the main attraction. Each smaller tree sports ornaments representing its region, creating a cross-country Christmas experience without leaving DC.
The holiday celebrations don't stop there - you can find scheduled entertainment and diverse seasonal displays including a menorah, making this a meaningful destination regardless of how you celebrate.

Visitor Experience
You can walk along the paved paths lined with American Elm trees and enjoy the proximity to the White House. The Ellipse offers more than just White House views - you can also catch glimpses of the Washington Monument rising in the distance.
The open layout makes this park fantastic for a morning jog, an afternoon picnic, or simply sitting and watching the world go by. And yes, you can bring your four-legged friends along - the area is pet-friendly.
Note that security measures are in place due to the park's VIP neighbor, and certain areas might be restricted during official events. For the best White House photo ops, head to the northern end of the Ellipse.
Planning Your Visit
The Ellipse provides a green space in the center of DC. While there's no public parking available right at the park, it's easily reached via public transportation.
During summer visits, you'll want to bring water and wear comfortable shoes - Washington humidity doesn't mess around. Try to stick to the designated pathways, as some grassy areas are off-limits to help preserve this historic ground for future generations.
