A Concrete Makeover That Works

Connecticut Avenue Overlook Park is one of those small urban surprises that makes DC special. This pocket park next to the south side of Dupont Circle transformed what was once just a concrete bridge overlook into an interesting urban space.

At the heart of this compact urban retreat stands a beautiful statue that gives the space its soul. It's nothing flashy - just a thoughtful artistic touch that elevates the park beyond being merely functional.

Step On It: Power From Your Feet

Here's where things get interesting. The park features these kinetic pavers (developed by a company called Pavegen) that actually capture energy from your footsteps as you walk across them. Pretty cool, right?

As people stroll through the park throughout the day, every step generates a tiny bit of electricity. All that stored energy then powers the park's lighting at night, illuminating the staggered granite seating areas. It's an interesting sustainability feature that activates with your footsteps.

At only about 850 square feet, this park makes the most of limited real estate. The raised planters add some much-needed greenery to break up the urban landscape.
