About the Location
Natural Landscape
Found in Ward 8, Oxon Run Park covers 126 acres of diverse terrain. The park stretches for about 3 miles alongside Oxon Run, a stream that eventually finds its way to the Potomac River.
The park offers a beautiful blend of wild and tamed spaces. Head to the eastern side and you'll discover a pristine upland forest dotted with stately beech trees and flowering mountain laurel. There's even a rare magnolia bog ecosystem that ecological enthusiasts might appreciate. The western section takes on a more developed feel, with recreational facilities and open green spaces excellent for those sunny afternoon outings.
Recreation and Trails
Lacing up for a run or pulling out your bike? The newly rebuilt bike trail weaves through the park. Whether you're walking, jogging, or cycling, the path offers a smooth ride through some pretty scenic spots. If you're looking to level up your workout, check out the exercise stations dotted along the trails - popular spots for adding variety to fitness routines.
The park provides green space for nearby neighborhoods including Congress Heights, Shipley Terrace, and Washington Highlands. It stretches all the way to the Maryland border at its southern end, creating a natural connection between the District and its neighbor.
Recreation Facilities
Sports enthusiasts will feel right at home with the park's baseball fields and basketball courts. If you've got kids in tow, the modern playground features updated equipment for climbing, sliding, and playing.
The park's amphitheater adds a cultural dimension, hosting community events and performances year-round. When nature calls, you'll come across a Bathroom facility conveniently located within the park.
Wildlife and Habitats
The natural areas of Oxon Run are surprisingly diverse, encompassing dry forested slopes, sunny meadows, and lush riparian forest. This variety creates perfect homes for all sorts of wildlife - keep your eyes peeled for deer, foxes, and playful squirrels. One of the park's simple joys is spotting herds of deer gracefully moving through the trees, especially during quiet morning hours.
The stream itself is a miniature landscape of winding channels, sandbars, islands and deep pools - a little aquatic world worth exploring.
Seasonal Highlights
Perhaps the park's best-kept secret is its collection of over 200 cherry trees that burst into spectacular bloom each spring. Many are actually clones of the original trees gifted to America by Tokyo back in 1912. If you're looking to enjoy cherry blossoms without the National Mall crowds, this is your spot.
Picnic and Gathering Areas
Need space for an outdoor gathering? The park offers generous picnic areas that can accommodate groups of various sizes. These relatively peaceful spots are fantastic for leisurely lunches, catching up with friends, or simply unwinding with a good book.
You'll also find designated grilling areas if you're in the mood for some outdoor cooking. They're particularly popular for family reunions and neighborhood get-togethers when the weather cooperates.
Community Involvement
In recent years, the park has seen renewed energy thanks to groups like Friends of Oxon Run Park and Mother's Peace Gardening Club, who organize programming and events during the year. From back-to-school gatherings to seasonal celebrations, there's often something happening that brings neighbors together.
With continued community engagement, this green space serves the surrounding DC neighborhoods.
