About the Location

A Bit of History

Found in the heart of LeDroit Park neighborhood in DC, The Park at LeDroit has a pretty interesting backstory. It sits near Howard University on what used to be the Gage-Eckington Elementary School grounds before the school was demolished in 2009.

Local residents banded together to lobby for turning this empty space into something the community could actually use, and in 2011, their efforts paid off when the park officially opened to the public.

Places to Play

Covering about 1.8 acres, this green space has a little something for everyone. Kids can let loose in the playground area - there's a section for the little ones and a larger play zone where older kids can burn off some energy.

When summer heat hits DC (and we all know how brutal that can be), the splash park becomes the neighborhood's favorite cooling spot. They've recently added a small splash fountain specifically designed with children in mind - a thoughtful touch for families.

Grow Your Own

One of the coolest aspects of this park is the Common Good City Farm, an urban agriculture center that doubles as a community garden. If you've got a green thumb, you might be interested in one of the 40 individual garden plots available for locals to grow their own vegetables and herbs.

There's also the LeDroit Park Community Garden offering additional space for urban farming enthusiasts. These gardens go beyond producing food - they create learning opportunities about sustainable practices and bring neighbors together over shared interests.

For the Fur Babies

The LeDroit Dog Park is where local pups and their humans congregate for some off-leash fun. It's become something of a social hub in its own right - a "smooth spot for the dogs" as some regulars put it, and a place where pet owners can connect while their four-legged friends play.

Community Vibes

Beyond the designated areas, the park acts as a neighborhood living room of sorts. The open green spaces are great for spreading out a picnic blanket, tossing a frisbee around, or just finding a quiet spot to read.

You'll notice the park is designed to be accessible for people with different mobility needs, making it truly welcoming for everyone. When evening rolls around, good lighting keeps the space safe and usable.

Fresh Updates

In 2019, the park got a significant facelift with improvements to the natural turf field and the addition of playground shade structures - those sail-shaped canopies that keep kids from getting too much sun while they play.

The renovations also included new seating areas, updated pathways, and the planting of 60 new trees that will provide more shade as they mature and enhance the park's green space.

These improvements have made The Park at LeDroit an important neighborhood space that continues to evolve with the community's needs.
