About the Location

A Step Back in Time

Located in Cleveland Park, the Rosedale Conservancy is a charming 3.1-acre green oasis that locals affectionately call their "village green." This historic green space has roots stretching all the way back to the 18th century.

At the heart of the conservancy stands the Rosedale Farmhouse, built in 1793 by Revolutionary War Colonel Uriah Forrest. The farmhouse incorporated a small stone cottage from 1740 and holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving house in Washington, D.C. While you can't tour inside (it's a private residence), the exterior alone is worth appreciating for its historical significance.

Colonial Landscape Preserved

Walking through the conservancy feels a bit like time travel. The terraced lawns date back to the 18th century, offering a rare glimpse into DC's colonial past. It's no wonder these beautifully preserved grounds earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The park might not exist today if not for the dedication of local residents who rallied together in 2002 to purchase the property. They restored the historic landscape and ensured this green space would remain accessible to the public. Today, a volunteer group of neighbors manages the conservancy, with financial support coming entirely from community donations.

A Neighborhood Sanctuary

The spacious grounds strike that perfect balance - plenty of room for activities without disturbing the peaceful neighborhood vibe. It's an ideal spot to spread out a picnic blanket, gather with family, or simply sit quietly with a book surrounded by history.

The grounds are meticulously maintained, with carefully tended paths and lawns.

For the Pups

If you're bringing your four-legged friend, note that the conservancy includes a designated dog area, but it comes with specific requirements. Dogs must be registered with the conservancy and wear the official membership tag to use the off-leash area.

You'll need to clean up after your pet and take any waste home with you, as there are no trash cans in the park. This might seem inconvenient, but it's part of what keeps the grounds so pristine and beautiful year-round.

Plan Your Visit

The park welcomes visitors from 6:30AM to 9PM daily. While primarily representing a neighborhood park, respectful visitors are welcome to enjoy this historic green space. If you're a history buff, nature lover, or just seeking a quiet moment in the city, the Rosedale Conservancy offers a uniquely peaceful touch of Washington's past.
