About Franklin Park
A Glimpse of History in Downtown DC
Tucked among the bustling streets of downtown Washington, D.C., Franklin Park spans an entire city block covering 4.79 acres. Bordered by K Street, 13th Street, I Street, and 14th Street, this urban green space has a story dating back to 1832, when it was established to protect natural springs that once supplied water to the White House. Pretty cool to think about those presidential sips while you're strolling through!
The park also has a surprising place in the history of modern physics. Nobel Laureate Charles Townes reportedly conceived the theoretical foundation for the laser and maser while sitting on a bench here - making one of the park's ordinary benches a rather extraordinary spot, at least in hindsight.

The Fresh Face of Franklin
In September 2021, Franklin Park emerged from a $21 million makeover - the result of teamwork between the National Park Service, the District of Columbia government, and the DowntownDC Business Improvement District. The renovation was more extensive than it might appear at first glance: 63 trees were replaced across the park, which explains why the canopy feels sparse compared to older photos. While the redesigned park has won many hearts, some longtime visitors do miss the mature shade trees that once stood tall here.

Alongside the replanting, the redesign added a new cafe building at the southern end, flexible seating areas, and spaces dedicated to art exhibits - giving the park a more varied set of uses than it had before.

What You'll Find
At the heart of Franklin Park sits an expanded and restored central fountain plaza with interactive water jets that create a refreshing focal point. The new landscaping adds natural beauty throughout, although you might want to bring your own shade on sunnier days until those young trees fill out.
Kids will love the dedicated children's garden with climbing rocks and play equipment - a wonderful spot for little ones to burn off energy while parents take a breather. Scattered umbrella-covered tables offer welcome shade spots for picnics or catching up on that book you've been meaning to finish.

On the west side of the park stands a bronze statue of Commodore John Barry, a hero of the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Created by sculptor John Boyle and installed in 1914, it's one of the park's oldest surviving features and a point of continuity through all the changes the park has undergone over the decades.
Getting Around and Comfort Considerations
The renovation prioritized accessibility with new ADA-compliant sidewalks and pathways that make exploring easier for everyone. Just a heads-up though - some staircases don't have handrails, which might be challenging for certain visitors.
Better lighting and more seating options create a welcoming vibe day or night. And yes, there are clean restroom facilities that are regularly checked and maintained - always a plus for any city park adventure!
Community Vibes
Franklin Park offers both lively activities and peaceful corners. Year-round, the park hosts free summer concerts, festivals, cultural events, and outdoor movies under the stars.
Its central location near Metro stations and bus routes makes popping in easy, whether you're an office worker seeking a lunch break escape or a tourist needing a moment of calm between museum visits.

Modern Touches
One particularly handy feature is the free WiFi across the park - perfect if you need to catch up on emails or just want to stream some tunes while lounging on the grass. When hunger strikes, you'll find plenty of dining options surrounding the park as well.
For culture enthusiasts, just across 13th Street stands the historic Franklin School building, which has its own remarkable claim to fame: on June 3, 1880, Alexander Graham Bell transmitted the world's first wireless message from that building, sending it over a beam of light to a receiver at 1325 L Street NW. The building now houses Planet Word, a language arts museum that opened in October 2020, creating a nice little intellectual corner in this part of downtown DC.
