About the Location
A Park with History
Located on Riverside Drive in Coral Springs, Lions Park has the distinction of being the first official park in the city's history. Spanning 7.6 acres, the park was dedicated on June 6, 1970, named after the Coral Springs Lions Club who helped establish it.
The park has deep roots in local history. It hosted the city's first little league games, becoming a cornerstone of community life when Coral Springs was just finding its identity. The story goes that Coral Ridge Properties donated the land for both the park and nearby Hunt Elementary to the school board, who then gifted back 6 acres specifically for this park. Two dedicated Lions Club members, John Nekich and Col. Ralph Gray, rolled up their sleeves to fundraise for the baseball diamond where those first little leaguers played.
In those early days, the park served as an important gathering place for the community. Coral Ridge Properties sponsored weekly barbecues that brought neighbors together around baseball games and other activities. When the town held parades, they would culminate right here, with celebrations continuing into the evening.
The Lions Legacy
The park's name honors the Lions Club, a civic organization established in 1917 by Chicago businessman Melvin Jones to tackle social issues in the aftermath of World War I. Interestingly, one of the Coral Springs Lions Club's charter members was Lewie Mullins - the first elected mayor of Coral Springs and a Coral Ridge Properties Vice President who helped shape the city's early development. The Lions Club continues its community work in Coral Springs to this day.
What You'll Find Today
Though rich in history, Lions Park offers plenty for today's visitors. Tucked away in a peaceful residential area, it's a nice spot for locals to enjoy some fresh air and recreation.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the baseball/softball fields, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, and tennis courts. If you're looking for a more relaxed experience, take a stroll on the paved walking trail that winds through the grounds. The park makes gatherings easy with its pavilions, picnic tables, and grills - excellent for family reunions or casual get-togethers with friends. There are plenty of benches where you can sit and enjoy the Florida sunshine, and concession stands for when hunger strikes.
Families with kids will gravitate toward the playground area, and yes, there are public restrooms available (always good to know!).
