About the Location

Riverfront Setting

Situated along the South Fork of the New River, Lewis Landing Park offers visitors a serene environment to enjoy nature and local history. The park's location along the river provides opportunities for fishing and enjoying water views.

It also includes open areas for relaxation and picnicking, serving as a quiet retreat for local residents and visitors alike.

Rich Historical Heritage

The park is named after the Lewis Family, who were among the first European settlers in the area, arriving in 1792. Lewis Landing Park was once the site of a Tequesta Indian village dating back to 800-1200 AD.

Archaeological excavations conducted in 2010 uncovered animal bones, shells, and artifacts including pottery shards, providing insight into the area's ancient inhabitants.

Educational Features

In recent years, efforts have been made to enhance the park's educational value. A Girl Scout Gold Award project involved creating informational signs to educate visitors about the park's history and the Tequesta Indian artifacts discovered on site.
