About the Location

A Peaceful Riverside Escape

Located next to the South Fork of the New River, Lewis Landing Park is one of those quiet retreats where you can escape the typical Fort Lauderdale hustle. The gentle flow of the river creates a calming backdrop whether you're dropping a fishing line or simply watching the world float by.

The observation deck offers an ideal perch to exhale and take in the water views, while the fishing dock invites both serious anglers and casual hook-droppers. This under-the-radar spot also represents a water taxi stop - making it not just a place to unwind but also a jumping-off point for exploring the city's waterways.

A Storied Past

The park gets its name from the Lewis Family, early European settlers who arrived in 1792 and established a farm growing coconuts, guava, limes, and oranges. Until 1824, their property likely served as a strategic point for British efforts to challenge Spanish control of the region.

But the human history here runs much deeper. This land was once home to a Tequesta Indian village dating back to 800-1200 AD. The Tequesta people navigated between the Everglades and Atlantic Ocean in dugout canoes and lived along the New River for at least 5,000 years.

When archaeologists excavated the site in 2010, they uncovered animal bones, shells, and pottery shards - silent testaments to the people who once called this place home. Sadly, by the time Spain handed Florida to England in 1763, diseases and enslavement had reduced the once-thriving Tequesta population to fewer than 300 individuals.

What You'll Find Today

The park itself isn't huge, but it's thoughtfully designed and well-maintained. Covered picnic areas with grills make it great for a family lunch or small gathering with friends.

Scattered throughout are gazebos, a winding jogging path, comfortable benches, and picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch. There's also a water fountain for quick refreshment. Keep in mind that parking is quite limited - there's just one regular space and one handicapped spot available.

Learning While Relaxing

Beyond its natural charm, the park offers some interesting educational elements. A dedicated Girl Scout Gold Award project brought informational signage to the park, helping visitors understand its rich history and the significance of the Tequesta artifacts discovered here.

In January 2015, the park welcomed a striking statue of a Tequesta Indian created by artist Nida Comas. The plaques mounted on the statue's pedestal tell the story of the Tequesta people who have since vanished from the landscape but whose legacy remains woven into the fabric of this special place.
