About the Location
Disc Golf Legacy
Located in Gainesville, Florida, Northside Park spreads across 47 acres of community-friendly green space. A notable feature? An 18-hole disc golf course that holds the distinction of being Florida's oldest standing course, having opened its chains to players back in 1982. This historic course represents home base for the Chain Hawks Disc Golf club and welcomes frisbee-tossing enthusiasts whether you're just learning or can hit every fairway.
In 2020, the park underwent significant renovations with funding from the Wild Spaces Public Places initiative and the Rotary Clubs of Gainesville Foundation. These renovations broadened the park's appeal beyond disc golf, creating spaces that work for everyone from toddlers to seniors.
Recreation for All Ages
A notable addition is the "Generations Play Zone," which offers activities for people of all ages. Here you can find outdoor games including bocce ball, pickleball and tennis courts, pétanque, table tennis, checkers, and chess - basically something for everyone in your crew.
The park has four pickleball courts and four tennis courts that are lit until the late-night closing time of 11:30 PM. Fair warning though - these courts tend to fill up fast with enthusiastic players. The well-maintained courts are popular with local pickleball players.
Children's Play Area
Kids have their own modern playground space adjacent to where the disc golfers do their thing. The children's playground comes equipped with all the essentials - slides and swings - plus an exciting zipline that's a definite hit with the younger crowd. The only downside: the shade structures don't offer quite enough coverage during those scorching Florida afternoons.
Nearby, you'll come across a small pond where families often gather to feed the local ducks, adding a touch of simple joy to the park experience.
Fitness and Wellness
If you're looking to get your steps in, Northside offers a pleasant walking path lined with various outdoor fitness equipment. These fitness stations are thoughtfully designed with older adults in mind, focusing on mobility exercises that emphasize repetition rather than pure strength training.
The smart layout means parents can squeeze in a workout while keeping their kiddos in sight at the playground - excellent for multitasking families.
Picnic and Gathering Spaces
For gatherings, the park features two separate covered picnic areas with concrete pavilions and charcoal grills. These well-maintained areas provide comfortable spaces to relax and enjoy a meal in the fresh air.
You'll come across ample parking across the grounds, so no need to stress about finding a spot even on busy days.
Natural Setting
The landscape here is mostly flat and moderately wooded, offering that perfect mix of open sunny areas and cooling shade. Just note that after a good Florida downpour, things can get a bit soggy underfoot, so plan your footwear accordingly.
Northside Park sits right next to the Gainesville/Alachua County Senior Recreation Center, making it a natural destination for older adults as well as families and the disc golf crowd. The park provides a green space where you can take a break and enjoy some time outdoors.
