About the Location
Park Overview
Found in Lakeland, Florida, Bonnet Springs Park spans a generous 168 acres of what used to be an abandoned CSX rail yard. Since opening its gates in October 2022, this urban oasis has transformed the industrial wasteland into a green space that some visitors have enthusiastically dubbed "the best park in America." Not too shabby for a park that's still in its infancy!
Trails and Navigation
Winding through the diverse landscape is the 1.7-mile paved loop called the Circulator - your gateway to exploring everything from lush botanical gardens to a serene lagoon. Think of it as the park's main artery, connecting all the cool spots you'll want to check out.
Not feeling like a walk? No problem. Hop on the free tram service that makes regular stops along the loop. You can flag it down anywhere along the route, however fair warning - it tends to fill up during those busy weekend afternoons.
Facilities and Attractions
Your journey likely begins at the Hollis Family Welcome Center, where you can grab a Starbucks coffee, browse the gift shop for souvenirs, or explore the Watson Clinic Gallery to get a taste of local history.
If you're visiting with kids, the Florida Children's Museum (formerly Explorations V Children's Museum) offers hands-on exhibits that'll keep the little ones engaged for hours - just note that this requires a separate admission fee.
Nature and Education
Need a break from Florida's famous heat? Duck into the GiveWell Community Foundation Nature Center, where you can cool off while learning about local wildlife through their educational displays.
The Butterfly Pavilion is a peaceful enclosed garden where you can watch colorful butterflies flutter about - it's surprisingly meditative and makes for great photos.
Meanwhile, the Ann & Ward Edwards Boathouse offers lovely views of the Blanton Family Lagoon, where you might spot baby alligators and other wildlife going about their day. Keep your camera ready!
Recreation Features
Playgrounds abound throughout Bonnet Springs, each designed with different age groups in mind. The Los Topos area with its spinning tops is particularly fun, while other playgrounds feature creative climbing structures that'll challenge even the most adventurous kids.
On hot days, the natural creek becomes the place to be, where children can splash in shallow water and connect with nature. It's simple, refreshing fun that often becomes the highlight of many families' visits.
The Crenshaw Canopy Walk lifts you up among the trees for a bird's-eye view of the park. If heights aren't your thing, don't worry - ground-level paths run parallel to the elevated walkway, offering equally beautiful scenery.
Food and Refreshments
When hunger strikes, The Depot café serves up casual meals to refuel your park adventure. Craving something sweet? Head to the ice cream shop for a cool treat. For the grown-ups, the rooftop bar offers not just drinks but some of the most impressive sunset views in Lakeland.
Food carts scattered around the grounds provide quick snacks and drinks when you need them. Or bring your own picnic - you can find plenty of shaded tables well-suited for spreading out lunch while enjoying the surroundings.
Event Spaces
Beyond day-to-day visits, Bonnet Springs doubles as an impressive event venue. The Citizens Bank & Trust Ballroom and the George W. Jenkins Outdoor Kitchen host everything from weddings to corporate gatherings.
The park keeps its calendar busy with community events, seasonal celebrations, and summer movie nights under the stars on the lawn.
Open 365 days a year from 6AM to 7:45PM with no admission fee, Bonnet Springs Park thoughtfully includes water fountains at various heights (serving adults, children, and four-legged friends) within the grounds, along with clean restroom facilities. It's a space where nature, education, and recreation come together in a way that feels both intentional and effortless.
