About the Location

A Natural Oasis in Urban Miami

Located in Southwest Miami-Dade County, Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park sprawls across 270 acres of natural beauty that feels worlds apart from Miami's urban pulse. Sitting right next to Zoo Miami, this park features a blend of woodland scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities, providing a contrast to Miami's urban environment.

The park honors the legacy of Larry Thompson, a popular Miami Herald columnist, and his wife Penny, who broke barriers in women's aviation. Both were passionate advocates for creating more green spaces in Miami-Dade County.

Lush Landscape

Wandering through the park, you can find yourself surrounded by expansive fields of wildflowers, palmettos, and rock pinelands. The natural buffer of indigenous avocado, mango, and lychee trees adds to the tropical feel. The mango grove stands out - hundreds of these trees create a distinctive spot within the park that's worth seeking out.

The centerpiece of the park is a 22-acre freshwater lake with a seasonal beach where you can cool off on those hot Florida days. Kids (and let's be honest, adults too) love the waterslide that operates on weekends and holidays during the summer months.

Recreational Trails

The park offers a network of trails for those wanting to explore on foot. No matter if you're into hiking, jogging, biking, or horseback riding, these paths let you immerse yourself in South Florida's woodland charm. The paved trails are well-maintained - convenient if you're pushing a stroller or prefer an even walking surface.

Bring your binoculars if you're a bird enthusiast! The trails offer plenty of opportunities to spot various bird species and wildlife going about their day in their natural habitat.

Campground Facilities

The campground includes 240 separate campsites for RVs, each with electrical, sewer, and water hook-ups. The sites are arranged in circular "pods" - providing some privacy while still allowing for a community atmosphere.

Prefer something more back-to-basics? The park also offers individual tent camping areas during certain seasons. No matter how you camp, you'll have access to four large bathhouse facilities with clean showers and restrooms - a comfort that seasoned campers particularly appreciate.

The campground amenities go beyond the basics with a heated swimming pool (open Wednesday through Sunday), laundry facilities, and a clubhouse where various activities take place. Note that the pool area has lifeguards on duty and specific rules to keep everyone safe.

Picnic and Event Areas

Planning a gathering? The park's pavilions and shelters can be reserved for family get-togethers and special occasions. These spaces are well-maintained with plenty of parking nearby, making them ideal spots for birthday celebrations, baby showers, or just a good old-fashioned family barbecue.

Larry and Penny Thompson Memorial Park offers a peaceful retreat within Miami's busy landscape - a place to experience nature, enjoy outdoor activities, or simply relax among the trees.
