About the Location
Historic Significance
Created in 1909, Lummus Park is one of Miami's oldest public green spaces. This 5.9-acre urban park is located in the Lummus Park Historic District of Miami, Florida, just west of Downtown. The park sits on the eastern bank of the Miami River, roughly bounded by NW 3rd Street to the north and NW 2nd Street to the south, with NW 3rd Court to the east separating it from Interstate 95.
Historic Buildings
Along the western edge of the park are two historic buildings that were relocated there to preserve them: the William Wagner House from 1857 and a limestone structure from Fort Dallas dating back to 1836. These buildings, along with other structures on the park's northern boundary, contribute to the Lummus Park Historic District that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.
Amenities and Features
The central area of Lummus Park features a large grassy space as well as basketball and volleyball courts, playgrounds, and garden seating areas. Between the park and NW 3rd Avenue, visitors can see the horses of the City of Miami police mounted patrol.
Urban Oasis
The park's location near downtown and its historic elements make it a unique urban green space that connects Miami's past and present. While not as large or famous as some of Miami's other parks, Lummus Park offers both recreational amenities and a glimpse into the city's pioneer history.
