The Women's Park
About The Women's Park
A Historic Tribute
Tucked away on Flagler Street, The Women's Park spans 15 peaceful acres around a lake, honoring women who've shaped Miami-Dade County. It's actually one of the first parks in the entire country specifically dedicated to women and their contributions to the local community. Pretty groundbreaking, right?
Features and Attractions
If you're looking to get some steps in, the park offers a lovely walking path that winds through the grounds. The half-mile loop around the lake is fantastic for a morning jog or an evening stroll when you just need to clear your head.
At the heart of the park sits the Roxcy O'Neal Bolton Women's History Gallery. Named after Roxcy Bolton herself - a powerhouse in Florida's women's movement - the gallery showcases exhibits on influential women throughout history who've left their mark on the world.
Natural Environment
The serene lake at the center of the park creates a little oasis of calm in the otherwise bustling Miami urban landscape. Keep an eye out for the turtles sunning themselves on rocks, ducks paddling across the water, and various birds that call this place home.
Thankfully, mature trees dot the landscape, offering generous shade when that Florida sun gets a bit too intense. Many people come here just to sit under a tree, lose themselves in a good book, or simply watch the world go by in this tranquil setting.
Artistic Elements
Art is woven into the fabric of The Women's Park. You'll want to check out the Gates and Fences Project created by local Miami artist Lydia Rubio, in collaboration with Miami-Dade County's Arts and Public Places program.
The installation symbolizes female power and strength, reflecting the park's purpose.
Historical Significance
Here's something fascinating: back in December 1992, during the park's dedication ceremony, they buried a time capsule on the grounds. Inside were hundreds of items celebrating local women's accomplishments, including writings from notable figures like environmental champion Marjory Stoneman Douglas, author Zora Neale Hurston, and anthropologist Lydia Cabrera.
After decades underground, the capsule was finally unveiled on March 22, 2023, as part of Women's History Month celebrations.
Recreation and Amenities
The park has plenty to offer visitors of all ages. Kids can burn off energy at the playground with its swings and climbing equipment. The sand surface underneath is a thoughtful touch to help prevent bumps and bruises from inevitable tumbles.
Scattered across the park are several picnic areas with tables, excellent for an afternoon lunch. There's even a covered pavilion you can reserve for special gatherings. Planning a cookout? The park has barbecue grills available for anyone wanting to fire up some outdoor cooking.
Programs and Activities
True to its mission, The Women's Park regularly hosts educational classes, workshops, and camps for women and girls. These programs focus on women's empowerment and education.
The park has also become a favorite spot for birthday parties and family reunions, with the covered shelter often booked for these celebrations. If you're planning an event, you might want to reserve it well in advance.
