About the Location
Recreational Facilities
Downey Park is a 47-acre community park nestled in Union Park, Orlando, Florida. Managed by Orange County Parks and Recreation, this spacious green space has a variety of facilities for visitors.
Baseball fans will appreciate that The park houses a well-kept baseball and softball complex with four baseball fields and one softball field. These fields aren't just sitting pretty - they're the home turf of the Union Park Little League, where local kids show off their batting skills and team spirit. The setup is quite impressive, with functional scoreboards, comfortable dugouts, and batting cages for practice sessions.
Water Features and Playgrounds
When Florida's famous heat kicks in, the park's splash playground (affectionately known as The Splash Pad) becomes the place to be. This gated water area operates seasonally and has shaded lounge chairs where parents can relax while keeping an eye on their children. Just remember to leave the snacks and drinks behind - only water is allowed in this area.
Kids have plenty of options to burn off energy at Downey Park's multiple playgrounds. Near the entrance, you'll find an inclusive playground designed with children of all abilities in mind - a thoughtful touch that makes the park welcoming for everyone. Younger children will love the colorful playground near the water, which offers good shade (a blessing in Orlando) and seating for tired parents. Older kids aren't left out either, with dedicated play areas that cater to their adventurous spirits.
Sports and Fitness Facilities
The park's fitness area provides options for those wanting to exercise. Pickleball enthusiasts can enjoy the eight pickleball courts that come with lights for evening games and a small pavilion with picnic tables nestled in the center - fantastic for catching your breath between matches.
The park doesn't stop there. Basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, and a skate park attract everyone from casual players to dedicated enthusiasts. Water fountains and bottle refill stations are conveniently placed near these active zones.
Four-legged family members get their own space too, with an off-leash dog park divided into sections for large and small dogs. Meanwhile, fishing enthusiasts can cast a line from the fishing dock on the lake for some peaceful recreation.
Picnic Areas and Amenities
Dotted throughout Downey Park are numerous picnic areas complete with tables and grills - ideal spots for family get-togethers or casual weekend lunches. Planning something bigger? Several pavilions are available for rent, making the park a great venue for birthday parties and celebrations.
Downey Park has clean restrooms strategically placed near playgrounds, pickleball courts, and pavilions. The overall maintenance of the park reflects the regular attention it receives from the staff.

During the year, the park comes alive with community programs and events. Kids can enjoy Camp Scooter during summer break, while basketball enthusiasts might want to check out the Junior Magic basketball program.
