About the Location
A Tapestry of Natural Florida
Nestled along the shores of Lake Maggiore in St. Petersburg, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve spans 245 acres of protected Florida wilderness. This natural area contains five distinct ecosystems representing native Florida landscapes: hardwood hammocks, sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, willow marsh, and lakeshore.
Walking through Boyd Hill offers a glimpse into Florida's natural history - each habitat features unique plants and wildlife that have called this region home long before the surrounding city existed.
Wander Wild Florida
More than three miles of trails and boardwalks wind through these diverse ecosystems, putting you face-to-face with authentic Florida nature. The well-maintained paths make exploring accessible whether you're an avid hiker or just looking for a peaceful afternoon stroll.
As part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Great Florida Birding Trail, Boyd Hill is a great spot for bird enthusiasts. Keep your binoculars handy - you might spot anything from graceful herons to colorful painted buntings. And yes, patient observers are occasionally rewarded with glimpses of alligators sunning themselves along the waterways. It's quite different seeing these creatures in their natural setting rather than behind zoo glass.
Learning Comes Naturally
The Lake Maggiore Environmental Education Center is the preserve's heart, offering thoughtful exhibits that help make sense of what you'll see on the trails. They host a variety of nature programs and workshops suitable for curious minds of all ages - from wide-eyed toddlers to lifelong learners.
Step back in time at the Pinellas Pioneer Settlement, where history comes alive through demonstrations of 19th-century Florida life. You can discover how early settlers managed before modern conveniences, gaining a new appreciation for both human ingenuity and our technological progress.
Sleep Under the Stars
For those who want to extend their nature immersion, the Terry Tomalin Campground offers St. Petersburg's first public primitive family camping experience. With just 12 sites, this intimate campground provides a rare opportunity to fall asleep to a chorus of frogs and wake with the birds.
Day visitors will find comfortable amenities including covered picnic areas excellent for family gatherings and clean restroom facilities. The $3 admission fee helps maintain the preserve.
Art Meets Wilderness
As you explore, you'll encounter surprising metal sculptures created by the late Paul Eppling, a St. Petersburg artist whose work complements rather than competes with the natural setting. These artistic touches add a uniquely human dimension to your wilderness experience.
A Breath of Fresh Air
Boyd Hill offers a sense of tranquility almost immediately after entering. The preserve's staff are knowledgeable and can offer insights about the area.
You'll likely notice many locals here, especially on weekends. Even with many other attractions in the city, residents frequently visit this peaceful natural area.
