Lassing Park

Waterfront Location

Lassing Park is a 14.2-acre waterfront park located in the Old Southeast neighborhood of St. Petersburg, Florida. Situated along the shores of Tampa Bay, the park offers scenic views of the water and surrounding area.

Historical Significance

The park was established in 1924 through a land donation from Judge Robert B. Lassing, with additional land acquisitions expanding it in subsequent years. It was officially dedicated on January 8, 1942.

Park Features

Lassing Park features expansive green spaces ideal for picnics, leisurely strolls, and various outdoor activities. The park's eastern border runs along the waterfront, providing visitors with access to a natural shoreline and beach area.

While swimming is not permitted, the shallow waters and tidal flats attract fishermen and nature enthusiasts.

Wildlife Habitat

The park serves as a habitat for local wildlife, particularly birds. Visitors may observe various seabirds hunting in the shallow waters or resting along the shore.

The tidal flats and grass beds in the shallow waters also support marine life such as blue crabs, juvenile fish, horseshoe crabs, and whelks.

Conservation Efforts

In recent years, efforts have been made to stabilize the eroding shoreline. A living shoreline project, initiated in 2022, aims to create oyster reefs and install coastal wetland plants along approximately 700 feet of the northeastern shoreline.

This project is designed to prevent further erosion, provide habitats for fish and wildlife, and improve water quality in the Tampa Bay ecosystem.

Accessibility

Lassing Park is open to the public from 6AM to 8PM daily. The park's location, just two miles south of downtown St. Petersburg, makes it easily accessible to both residents and visitors.
