Located in St. Petersburg, Florida, Indian Mound Park preserves a fascinating piece of Native American history. These shell mounds aren't just random piles - they're actually fascinating time capsules formed from oyster shells, food remains, and artifacts left behind by indigenous peoples thousands of years ago.
These impressive structures were created by the Tocobaga people, who called the Tampa Bay region home from around 900 to 1500 AD. The mounds weren't just trash heaps (far from it!) - they functioned as platforms for important buildings, burial grounds, and sacred ceremonial spaces. There's even a local legend that the Tocobaga spirits continue to watch over Tampa Bay to this day.

The star attraction here is the Pinellas Point Temple Mound, which stands about 17 feet tall with a flat top measuring roughly 104 feet long and 19 feet wide. Pretty impressive for something built so long ago!
As you wander through the park, you'll find informational signs that help bring the area's rich Native American heritage to life.
