About the Location
Natural Oasis
At the heart of this hidden gem sits a natural spring forming a small, crystal-clear blue pool about 7-8 yards across and 3 feet deep. The spring's waters gently meander through a short sandy run before joining the Hillsborough River through a culvert.
Tucked along North River Shore Drive, Purity Springs Park offers a quiet escape from Tampa's urban buzz. Massive oak trees embrace the area, their sprawling branches creating cool pockets of shade and a genuinely peaceful vibe. If you're lucky, you might spot some of Florida's beloved wildlife along the riverfront - yes, even manatees have been known to make appearances!
A Splash of History
Before becoming the tranquil spot it is today, this was actually the site of the Purity Springs Water Company in the early 1900s. The spring wasn't just pretty to look at - it provided drinking water to nearby neighborhoods and even supplied ships docked at Tampa's port.
In 1961, the City of Tampa purchased the spring, and over time, it evolved into the public park we know today. For many locals, this place holds a special spot in their hearts, with memories spanning generations, making it a true neighborhood treasure.
What to Expect
Grassy slopes lead down to the spring, giving you an excellent perch to admire the clear waters. While you might be tempted to dip your toes in (especially on those scorching Florida days), swimming isn't allowed due to contamination concerns.
Keep in mind that this is definitely a pocket park in the truest sense - small and minimalist. You won't find amenities like picnic tables, benches, restrooms, or playground equipment here. Parking is also quite limited to just a few street spots. If you're planning to stay a while, bringing a blanket to spread on the grass is your best bet.
Making the Most of Your Visit
Purity Springs Park shines as a spot for short visits and quiet reflection. Its intimate size and natural setting create an excellent backdrop for a mental reset or a peaceful moment away from city life.
There's a walking path along the river that, while brief, offers lovely views of the Hillsborough River. Many visitors also enjoy fishing in the canal located just across the street from the park.
Looking Ahead
The City of Tampa is currently working on a restoration project for the park. This initiative aims to enhance the spring run, stabilize the basin, and create a living shoreline along the Hillsborough River.
Once completed, these improvements should boost water quality, expand native plant life, create better wildlife habitats, and help protect against storm damage. It's a welcome development, as many visitors have noted that this unique natural treasure could use some additional care and maintenance.
