Dyer Park
About Dyer Park
A Hill in Flat Florida? Yes, Please!
Located in West Palm Beach sits Dyer Park, a 560-acre spot with a fascinating backstory. Opened in 1986 on a former landfill site, this park's crown jewel is something rare for South Florida - a 55-foot hill that breaks up the typically pancake-flat landscape. It's surprising what a little elevation can do to change your outdoor experience.
We love how this space has been reimagined from its humble beginnings into something beautiful. The hill creates not just visual interest but also provides some surprisingly varied terrain for activities. And if you time your visit right, you'll be treated to some absolutely stunning sunsets from several spots within the park.
Trails for Every Adventure
If you're into exploring on wheels or foot, there are several options. The park has an extensive network of trails that snake around and climb over that distinctive hill. You can cruise along the 4.12-mile paved bicycle path, tackle the more challenging 3.2-mile mountain bike trail, or saddle up for a ride on the 3.4-mile equestrian trail.
What's nice about the perimeter trail is that it's about 80% shaded - a true blessing during those sweltering Florida days. Looking for more of a workout? The hill trail with its looser gravel will definitely get your heart pumping, regardless of your skill level.
Sports Galore
Athletic fields are scattered within the park, including baseball and softball diamonds and multipurpose fields ideal for soccer or football games. Pickup basketball games happen regularly on the park's courts, and younger visitors can participate in youth sports programs, including First Tee golf activities designed to introduce kids to the game.
Family Fun Central
Dyer Park offers a family-friendly environment with its children's playground area where the little ones can burn off energy. When hunger strikes, head to one of the many picnic areas equipped with grills. Planning something bigger? The group pavilions come with electricity, and some can host parties of up to 100 people.
Anglers will appreciate the 55-acre fishing lake stocked with bass and catfish - just remember to bring your gear! And yes, there are clean restrooms available across the park (always important information when planning a day out).
Not Your Average Park Activities
What sets Dyer Park apart are some of its more specialized recreational offerings. RC enthusiasts gather at the designated area for radio-controlled airplanes, which is especially lively on weekends. The spacious grounds also provide a great launch site for model rocket launches - they even host official National Association of Rocketry events. And on breezy days, the wide-open spaces are ideal for kite flying - something about watching colorful kites against the blue Florida sky just feels right.
Natural Florida
Early birds might spot wild rabbits, gophers, and various feathered friends during morning visits. The park's diverse landscape creates different mini-ecosystems to explore, but it's wise to keep an eye out near water areas where snakes occasionally make appearances.
The open, prairie-like views have a calming effect. Visitors often come to sit quietly and take a break from busy daily routines.
Community at Heart
Beyond recreational facilities, Dyer Park hosts various events throughout the year, including nature walks and fitness classes focused on environmental awareness and physical activity.
You can visit Dyer Park from 5:30 AM to 6:00 PM seven days a week - well-suited for catching those early morning views or late afternoon skies.
