Cleopas R. Johnson Park
About Cleopas R. Johnson Park
A Modern Oasis in the City
Tucked away near downtown Atlanta, Cleopas R. Johnson Park spans a modest 4.4 acres but offers a lot for its size. Back in 2011, this urban retreat got a serious makeover, saying goodbye to crumbling concrete playground equipment and hello to a fresh community space that actually makes you want to spend time outdoors.
The park continues to evolve with recent upgrades, growing into a popular neighborhood gathering spot. Despite not being the biggest green space in Atlanta, there's something peaceful about wandering through here - with open areas where you can relax or be active.
Playground That's Anything But Ordinary
Let's talk about what makes this playground stand out. The 17-foot tall hexagonal cable climber (imagine a giant blue spider web reaching toward the sky) is definitely the showstopper. It's challenging enough for older kids while tempting plenty of adults to kick off their shoes and channel their inner child.
Tech meets outdoor play with the NEO 360 Play System, an electronic game with different modes to keep kids entertained - though fair warning, it's occasionally out of commission. For the little ones, traditional swings and round-about spin seats near the church provide reliable fun that never goes out of style.
College Pride Woven Into Every Detail
Look closely and you'll notice the playground equipment isn't randomly colored. The schemes actually represent four local colleges: Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and Morris Brown. It's a subtle but meaningful nod to the educational institutions that shape this community.
Beyond the Playground
Not into climbing giant spider webs? No problem. The park houses tennis courts for those who prefer racquet sports, a well-maintained basketball court that sees plenty of action, and concrete walking trails that loop around the grounds.
These paths work equally well for morning jogs, afternoon strolls, roller skating adventures, or walking your four-legged friend. And if you're just looking to sprawl out on some grass with a good book, the open green spaces are ideal for that.
Simple Comforts
Scattered throughout the park, you can find picnic tables and park benches well-suited for catching your breath or enjoying a sandwich in the shade. Just note that there aren't any public restrooms within the park itself - though the Burger King across the street might save you in a pinch if you're willing to buy something small.
A Meaningful Tribute
The park isn't just about play - it's also about remembering history. A striking art sculpture honors the park's namesake, Cleopas R. Johnson, who left his mark as a band director at Morris Brown College. This installation transforms a simple neighborhood park into something more meaningful - a place where recreation and remembrance share the same space.
