About Hurt Park

A Slice of History Downtown

Located in the urban landscape of downtown Atlanta sits Hurt Park, a small but significant green space with a story that stretches back to 1940. This park holds a special distinction - it was actually the first public park established in downtown Atlanta since the 1860s. Named after Joel Hurt, a visionary civil engineer and real estate developer who shaped much of early Atlanta, the park represents a piece of the city's soul.

Mayor William B. Hartsfield considered the creation of this park (originally called Joel Hurt Memorial Park) one of his administration's crowning achievements. It wasn't just about creating green space - it was part of a broader vision to transform the area around the Municipal Auditorium into a civic center for Atlanta's growing needs.

The Layout

Set in a triangular plot bordered by Edgewood Avenue, Courtland Street, and Gilmer Street, Hurt Park may be modest in size, but it packs a lot into its footprint. Landscape architect William C. Pauley designed this urban retreat with partial funding from the Woodruff Foundation, and it became a notable downtown landmark throughout the 1940s and 1950s.

Today, you'll find comfortable stone benches scattered within the grounds, meant for taking a breather or watching the world go by. Getting here is a breeze too - there's a streetcar stop nearby if you're using public transit.

The Famous Fountain

The undeniable star of Hurt Park is its "Fountain of Light." This electric fountain, originally designed by Atlanta sculptor Julian Harris, has been the park's centerpiece since day one. In its original form, the fountain incorporated 78 bulbs of varying wattage that created a mesmerizing display of changing patterns and colors - a true "rainbow symphony" that would play out in 20-minute intervals.

The fountain looks particularly magical in the evening when its blue lights create a gorgeous glow against the night sky. It's one of those simple but perfect photo opportunities that capture the charm of urban Atlanta.

A Fresh Start

After a two-year renovation project, Hurt Park reopened in August 2022 with a renewed sense of purpose. The revitalization, led by landscape architecture firm HGOR and various partners, carefully balanced preserving the park's historic elements while making it work for today's urban dwellers.

The iconic fountain received a complete overhaul - new mechanics, updated electrical systems, and modern LED lighting that captures the spirit of the original display while using contemporary technology. With support from Georgia State University, this historic space has been refreshed while preserving its heritage.

Beyond a Park

Beyond its trees and fountain, Hurt Park holds deeper significance for Atlanta. Its grounds once served as a platform where Martin Luther King Jr. addressed civil rights activists, adding layers of cultural importance to this unassuming space.

Today, its location adjacent to Georgia State University's campus makes it a natural gathering spot for students and faculty looking for a moment of green amid the concrete. You might spot study groups, impromptu meetups, or just individuals seeking a quiet moment between classes.

Community Connections

Hurt Park now hosts various outdoor events and community activities throughout the year in this central location.

Keep your eyes peeled for a Tiny Door Atlanta installation - part of a whimsical art project featuring miniature doors hidden throughout the city. And don't be surprised if you share your visit with the park's resident squirrels, who add a touch of wildlife charm to this downtown oasis.

Taking a Break

If you're looking to stretch your legs or find a quiet spot to gather your thoughts, Hurt Park works well. Its open grassy areas provide space for a quick outdoor workout or a moment of meditation.

With a pleasant mix of sunny spots and shaded areas, the park offers a versatile environment that works in almost any season - a rare find in the heart of downtown Atlanta.
