Southside Park
About Southside Park
Atlanta's Hidden Natural Space
Tucked away along Jonesboro Road in south Atlanta, just north of I-285, lies a 211-acre urban oasis that many locals consider a best-kept secret. Southside Park ranks as the second-largest green space within city limits (only recently surpassed by Westside Park), yet somehow maintains that peaceful, undiscovered feel that's increasingly rare in Georgia's bustling capital.
Just a 15-minute drive from downtown, this expansive natural space provides an escape from city life without actually leaving the city.
Trails That Keep You Coming Back
If you're into outdoor adventures, you'll discover about 7 miles of well-designed trails here, arranged in a clever stacked loop system. Whether you're a beginner finding your footing, an intermediate explorer seeking a challenge, or an advanced trail enthusiast looking for some technical fun, there's a path with your name on it.
The Hickory trail deserves special mention - with its flowing single track, thoughtful switchbacks, and gradual climbs that lead to some genuinely exciting sections. Hikers and joggers particularly appreciate the scenic routes that offer a surprisingly varied terrain. Those hills? They're excellent for getting your heart rate up without completely destroying your will to live.
Keep your eyes peeled while exploring - you might spot turtles and other local wildlife sharing the trails with you. If you're bringing a mountain bike, head to the far right of the baseball fields to access the trailheads.
Sports for Everyone
Beyond the trails, Southside Park delivers with four baseball diamonds featuring classic dirt infields that bring a touch of nostalgia to the games played here. Throughout the year, these fields host everything from softball leagues to spirited kickball tournaments.
The six pickleball courts are quite popular - some players consider them among the better ones in Atlanta. The courts regularly host tournaments and have become a genuine gathering spot for the city's growing pickleball community.
There's also a well-maintained soccer field for those who prefer their sports with a bit more running, and a concession stand that opens during busier periods and events.
Good to Know Before You Go
The park is most easily reached by car, with a decent-sized parking lot available. A city study from 2007 highlighted the need for better access via public transportation, bike paths, and pedestrian routes - improvements that are still works in progress.
One important heads-up: there are currently no restroom facilities or portable toilets in the park. Many regulars have learned to plan accordingly or know which nearby gas stations and restaurants offer the friendliest bathroom policies.
Your four-legged friends are welcome across the park, but you'll need to keep them leashed as there's no dedicated dog park area.
Given the proximity to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, you'll occasionally hear the rumble of aircraft overhead - a subtle reminder that you're enjoying nature in the heart of a major metropolitan area.
Southside Park offers that rare combination of natural beauty and recreational variety that makes it worth returning to in any season. The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 11PM.
