Location and Neighborhood
North Highland Park is a small 0.41 acre park located at the northeast corner of North Highland Avenue and St. Charles Place in the historic Atkins Park neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia.
The park is often considered part of the larger Virginia Highland neighborhood.
Historical Background
The site was originally occupied by two adjacent residential lots. In 1952, a house on one of the lots was demolished and the Highland Branch of the Atlanta Public Library was built, spanning both lots.
The library was later enlarged in 1976 but ultimately demolished in 1990. In December 2008, the Virginia Highland Civic Association purchased the land.
Park Development
As of 2011, the park remained largely undeveloped. However, there were plans to transform it into an eco-friendly park and rain garden.
The project aimed to serve as a demonstration for managing stormwater through bioretention. This process involves capturing water on-site using native Georgia plants, which naturally filter out pollutants. The goal is to allow the water to replenish the water table rather than being directed into storm drains.
Management and Significance
North Highland Park is maintained by the Virginia Highland Civic Association in cooperation with the City of Atlanta Parks Department.
Its location near the vibrant North Highland Avenue corridor makes it a potential green space for local residents and visitors to the area.
