North Highland Park
About North Highland Park
Location and Neighborhood
Tucked away at the northeast corner of North Highland Avenue and St. Charles Place, North Highland Park is a pocket-sized green space spanning just 0.41 acres in Atlanta's historic Atkins Park neighborhood.
While technically in Atkins Park, most locals consider it part of the broader Virginia Highland area. You can easily access this little urban oasis from either Highland Avenue or St. Charles Place.
Historical Background
This spot has quite the backstory. Originally, two residential lots stood here until 1952, when one house was demolished to make way for the Highland Branch of the Atlanta Public Library, which eventually sprawled across both lots.
The library expanded in 1976 but ultimately met its end in 1990 when it was torn down. The land sat in limbo until December 2008, when the Virginia Highland Civic Association stepped in and purchased it.
Park Development
As recently as 2011, the park was still pretty bare-bones with not much development. However, there were ambitious plans to transform it into an eco-conscious space featuring a rain garden.
The vision was pretty forward-thinking - creating a demonstration site for sustainable stormwater management through bioretention. In plain English? Using native Georgia plants to naturally filter pollutants from rainwater, allowing it to replenish the water table rather than rushing off into storm drains.
Park Features
Today, North Highland Park offers a well-kept lawn where you can spread out a blanket and enjoy some downtime. One of its most charming features is the circular canopy of trees that creates a natural ceiling of shade and a sense of tranquility in the midst of city life.
It's a particularly nice spot for families, offering a quiet retreat from the energy of the surrounding neighborhood.
Management and Significance
The park is a collaborative effort, maintained by the Virginia Highland Civic Association working together with the City of Atlanta Parks Department.
Its location near the lively North Highland Avenue corridor makes it a valuable green space for nearby residents and anyone exploring the area who needs a moment of calm.
