Cabbagetown Park
About Cabbagetown Park
A Glimpse of Atlanta's Green History
Tucked in the heart of Atlanta's historic Cabbagetown district lies a little green spot spanning about 3.5 acres. Cabbagetown Park sits on what once was the Grant Park Primary School grounds before the school closed its doors back in 1981.
It wasn't until the early 2000s that this space transformed into the park we know today. After years of neighborhood residents rolling up their sleeves and making their voices heard, the Atlanta Board of Education finally gave the unanimous thumbs-up in March 2002 to hand the property over to the city. Behind this victory stood dedicated locals, especially the Cabbagetown Neighborhood Improvement Association (CNIA) and the Cabbagetown Initiative (CI) who wouldn't take no for an answer.
What You'll Find There
The park offers generous open green spaces that make you forget you're in the middle of a bustling city. If you're bringing little ones along, they'll love the playground that's particularly ideal for toddlers and younger kids.
Feel like stretching your legs? The walking paths are wide enough for strollers and connect through multiple loops to the surrounding streets, making it easy to pop in from different parts of the neighborhood. On hot Atlanta days, you'll appreciate the large shade trees creating natural shelter, with benches thoughtfully placed underneath - perfect spots to catch your breath or lose yourself in a good book.
Right next to the park stands a community center in what used to be a day care building. This space came as part of the package when the park was developed and now hosts various neighborhood activities.
More Than a Park
Despite its modest size, Cabbagetown Park punches above its weight as a social cornerstone. It hosts the neighborhood's annual Chomp and Stomp festival, where chili and bluegrass bring locals together in celebration. The park's amphitheater occasionally fills with the sounds of live music, adding cultural flavor to this green space.
What's notable about this park is how it feels like a secluded retreat even though it's not far from main roads. It's a popular spot for picnics, walks, and neighbor meet-ups in this historic Atlanta community.
Good to Know Before You Go
You can visit the park any day between 6AM and 11PM, giving you plenty of time for morning jogs or evening hangouts. Just a heads-up that parking can be tricky - street spots near the park are limited, so you might need to park a block or two away and walk.
One thing to note is that there aren't any public restrooms in the park. Fortunately, there are restaurants nearby if nature calls while you're exploring this Cabbagetown treasure.
