John Howell Memorial Park
About John Howell Memorial Park
Park History
Tucked into the charming Virginia-Highland neighborhood of Atlanta, John Howell Memorial Park spans 2.8 acres along Virginia Avenue and Barnett Street, just 2.5 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
What makes this green space particularly special is its origin story. Back in the 1960s, 11 houses stood where the park now flourishes. They were demolished for an Interstate 485 project that ultimately never happened, thanks to dedicated community activism led by John Howell and fellow residents who fought to preserve their beloved neighborhood.
In 1989, the park was named after Howell, a passionate civic activist who championed human rights, civil liberties, neighborhood preservation, and the arts. His legacy lives on in this vibrant community space.

Amenities and Features
On the western side of the park, you'll find sand volleyball courts that hold a special distinction as the oldest in Atlanta, dating back to 1982. As you stroll eastward, you'll encounter the Cunard Memorial playground, a thoughtful tribute established in 2004 to honor neighborhood residents who lost their lives too soon.
The park flows into an open grassy area great for lazy afternoon picnics or impromptu frisbee games. A circular pathway paved with commemorative bricks invites contemplative walks, while eleven granite columns line Virginia Avenue - each bearing the address of one of the homes that once stood here before the canceled freeway project.
Families appreciate the thoughtfully designed playground areas with separate sections for toddlers and older kids. Mature trees cast cooling shade around the park, making even summer visits comfortable. You'll come across water fountains and benches scattered throughout, along with accessible restroom facilities. And yes, your four-legged friends are welcome too - the park is dog-friendly, making it a neighborhood favorite for daily walks.

Art and Monuments
Keep an eye out for the striking wrought iron phoenix sculpture that stands as a symbol of Atlanta's resilience. Since March 2000, a nearby plaque has shared the park's history with visitors.
The winding path with its commemorative bricks offers a chance to slow down and reflect while enjoying the park's peaceful atmosphere - a small oasis amid the urban bustle.
Community Engagement
John Howell Memorial Park functions as a central gathering place for the neighborhood. Throughout the year, it hosts community gatherings including the annual Virginia-Highland Summerfest and Arts Festival, featuring music, food trucks, and works by local artists.
The park regularly becomes a venue for meaningful community causes, hosting health awareness events like cancer walks and various activities that strengthen neighborhood bonds.
The Virginia-Highland Civic Association continues its stewardship of the park, focusing recently on removing invasive plants, addressing soil erosion issues, and planning thoughtfully for the future. Renovations are planned for 2025 to maintain and improve the park.
