About the Location
A Green Heart in Downtown
Set in the core of downtown Augusta, Georgia, Augusta Common carves out a peaceful retreat between Broad and Reynolds Streets. Spanning the block from 8th to 9th Street, this green space has become an important part of community life since opening in 2002.
Once home to a row of run-down buildings, this space emerged as part of Augusta's urban development, transforming the area into a public square. We're always struck by how immaculately maintained it is - no matter when you visit, the grounds are pristine and inviting.
What You'll Find There
Though modest in size at about an acre, the Common offers a refreshing expanse of open lawn that feels like a breath of fresh air amid the surrounding cityscape. History stands tall here in the form of a life-size sculpture of General James Oglethorpe, the city's founder.
The statue (a gift from Augusta Tomorrow, Inc.) portrays Oglethorpe in civilian clothes at age 36 - a nod to 1736 when he established Augusta. Music lovers will appreciate the statue of the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown, Augusta's famous hometown hero, however it could perhaps use a taller pedestal to give him the prominence he deserves.
On hot Georgia days, the shaded areas become precious real estate, offering welcome relief from the sun. Several picnic tables dot the landscape, well-suited for enjoying a casual lunch or catching up with friends over coffee.
When the Common Comes Alive
During the year, this modest green space transforms into Augusta's cultural crossroads. The calendar fills with festivals, concerts, and gatherings that bring the community together in celebration.
The Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival turns the park into a kaleidoscope of creativity, while Oktoberfest and the Latino Festival bring international flavors to the heart of Georgia. The spirited Border Bash draws crowds of sports enthusiasts, and when winter arrives, the holiday tree lighting and Victorian Carriage Parade wrap the Common in seasonal charm.
Saturday mornings buzz with activity during the Farmers Market, where you can sample local honey, browse specialty foods, and fill your bag with farm-fresh produce. The Candlelight Jazz series offers soulful sounds under the stars - quality music without breaking the bank.
From Fourth of July fireworks lighting up the summer sky to colorful Pride celebrations and pre-Masters Tournament excitement, the Common adapts to whatever occasion the city is celebrating. Its versatile design works just as well for intimate gatherings as it does for major community events.
Perfectly Positioned
What makes Augusta Common truly special is its strategic location, seamlessly connecting the Riverwalk with downtown's business district and enhancing the walkability of the entire area. Wide sidewalks border the lawn, giving you plenty of space to stroll or simply sit and watch the world go by.
You'll come across clean, well-maintained public restrooms available when nature calls. If you're driving in for an event, your best bet for parking is along Reynolds Street or the side streets, which typically offer easier access than Broad Street.
The Common attracts both locals and visitors with its welcoming atmosphere.
