Chatham Square
About Chatham Square
Historic Origins
Chatham Square stands as one of Savannah's 22 historic squares, dating back to 1847. Nestled in the southernmost row of the city's five-square grid, you'll find it along Barnard Street between Taylor and Gordon Streets. The square bears the name of William Pitt, the First Earl of Chatham - an early champion of the Georgia colony when it was just finding its footing.
Peaceful Atmosphere
If you're looking for a quiet moment away from Savannah's busier spots, Chatham Square offers a peaceful retreat. The square's old oak trees create a natural canopy, offering welcome shade during those sticky Georgia summer afternoons. These magnificent trees, draped with Spanish moss that sways gently in the breeze, give the square its distinctly Southern character.
There's something refreshing about Chatham Square's simplicity. While it lacks the elaborate fountains or monuments of some of Savannah's showier squares, this unassuming space feels genuinely authentic. It's primarily a neighborhood spot, reflecting the residential vibe of its surroundings. Many locals will tell you it's among the most peaceful squares in the city - a place where tourist crowds thin out and Savannah's historic charm can be appreciated in relative solitude.
You can find several benches scattered throughout the square, meant for sitting with a good book, enjoying a casual lunch, or simply watching the world go by. The unhurried atmosphere makes it ideal for those moments when you just need to catch your breath and soak in your surroundings.
Notable Surroundings
Just off the square, Gordon Row features fifteen four-story brick houses lining the southeast side. Built between 1853 and 1855, these impressive row houses represent an important part of Savannah's architectural heritage.
On the northwest corner, the former Barnard Street School building catches the eye. Constructed in 1906, this historic structure now functions as part of the Savannah College of Art and Design campus, blending education and preservation in typical Savannah fashion.
A short stroll away lies the famous Jones Street, frequently mentioned in travel articles as one of America's most beautiful streets. The area's 19th-century homes showcase remarkable craftsmanship and design, complementing the square's historic feel.
Monument
In the northern section of the square stands a modest but meaningful monument. Added in 1964, this granite cylinder topped with a bronze sundial honors Louis Burke Toomer, an African-American businessman and politician whose story reflects part of Savannah's diverse history.
Special Uses
The square's intimate setting and photogenic surroundings make it a natural choice for photography sessions. You'll often spot couples or families capturing memories among the oaks and Spanish moss.
Many couples also choose this picturesque spot for elopements and small weddings, drawn to its quiet beauty and relatively uncrowded atmosphere. The natural charm requires little additional decoration for these special moments.
And if you're traveling with your furry friend, you'll be pleased to know the square is dog-friendly. It's an excellent place to enjoy a leisurely walk with your pet while taking in a slice of Savannah's historic character.
