About Dixon Park
A Piece of Savannah History
Tucked away at the corner of East Broad and Henry Streets in Savannah, Georgia, Dixon Park might be small (just 0.1 acres), but it carries significant weight in the story of the Victorian Historic District neighborhood it calls home.
This pocket park has witnessed its fair share of Savannah's complex social history. Back in the early 1900s, Dixon Park became a flashpoint in the city's racial landscape, designated as a "Black" park by officials - a decision that sparked tension with some white residents nearby. The space frequently became the center of disagreements between Black and white neighbors in the surrounding area.
Fighting for Fairness
In 1921, Black residents took action, petitioning the City Council to officially designate the park as a playground for Black youth. Their motivation was heartbreakingly straightforward: they wanted to protect their children from the harassment they faced while trying to simply enjoy the park. Unfortunately, the council never acted on their request.
