About Telfair Square
A Glimpse Into History
Telfair Square is one of the original squares mapped out in Savannah's historic district back in 1733. It wasn't always known by this name though - originally called St. James Square, the name was a nod to the famous green space in London, and the neighborhood around it was considered one of the most fashionable addresses in early Savannah. The square got its current name in 1883 to honor the Telfair family, who left quite an impressive mark on Savannah's cultural and economic landscape.
The Telfairs were a prominent Georgia dynasty. Edward Telfair served as Governor of Georgia, his son Thomas became a U.S. Congressman, and his daughter Mary Telfair (1791 - 1875) was the key benefactor behind the Telfair Museum of Art, ensuring the family's legacy would endure in Savannah's cultural life long after her death. Telfair Square also holds a unique distinction among Savannah's many squares: it's the only one named after a family rather than a single individual or historical event.

There's something almost tangibly historic about this place. You can feel the weight of stories as you walk through, and many visitors find themselves drawn to this aspect of the square. Some even join ghost tours that share eerie tales about the area, including the mysterious story of the Telfair tower.
Cultural Heart of the City
Situated at the crossing of Barnard and President Streets, Telfair Square holds a special place in Savannah's artistic soul. It's flanked by two remarkable art museums - the historic Telfair Academy on the northwest corner and the contemporary Jepson Center for the Arts on the southwest. The Telfair Academy at 121 Barnard Street is the oldest building on the square, constructed between 1818 and 1820, meaning it has been standing here for over two centuries.
These buildings are part of the Telfair Museums, which happen to be the oldest public art museum in the Southern United States. The collections housed within enhance a visit to the square, creating a cultural focal point within Savannah.
What You'll Find There
The square itself follows that classic Savannah park design - paved walkways cutting through, plenty of benches for sitting, and magnificent live oak trees that provide welcome shade on those warm Georgia days. If you look carefully, you'll spot two small monuments: a subtle cement monument honoring the Girl Scouts in the southeastern corner, and an artistic cement image of a chambered nautilus in the northeast.

The Girl Scouts monument carries more weight than its modest size might suggest. The organization was founded by Juliette Gordon Low, who was born and raised in Savannah, so a tribute to the Girl Scouts in her hometown feels particularly apt - one of those details that rewards you if you take a closer look.
There's a serenity here that makes it ideal for catching your breath, watching the world go by, or diving into a good book. The generous open grassy areas make it a nice spot for small gatherings too - you might even stumble upon a wedding ceremony if you're lucky.
Architectural Surroundings
Look to the southern side of the square and you'll see Trinity Methodist Church, a Greek Revival structure dating back to 1848. As one of Savannah's oldest Methodist congregations, it adds another layer of historical significance to this already story-rich area.
Telfair Square offers a calm green retreat in the midst of Savannah's bustling historic district - a place where you can relax under the oak trees and take in the surrounding historic architecture and cultural institutions.
Experiencing Telfair Square
Its central location makes this square an ideal jumping-off point for exploring Savannah's historic district. It's a popular meeting spot for ghost tours and walking explorations through the city.
The tranquil environment makes it fantastic for walking your dog or just taking a moment to catch your breath during a day of sightseeing. If you get hungry or thirsty, there are several nearby establishments - you can bring a snack or drink to enjoy on one of the square's benches while taking in the local atmosphere.
