Skidaway Island State Park
About Skidaway Island State Park
Natural Setting
Tucked away near historic Savannah, Georgia, Skidaway Island State Park spans 588 acres of coastal landscape. The park sits right alongside Skidaway Narrows, part of Georgia's Intracoastal Waterway, creating a perfect blend of lush maritime forest and expansive salt marshes.
Six miles of hiking trails wind through the park, taking you under the shade of live oaks, between cabbage palmettos, and past southern red cedars and pines. The trails are well-kept and easy to follow, connecting to elevated boardwalks and an observation tower that offer some seriously impressive views of the surrounding wilderness.
Wildlife
The park has abundant wildlife throughout. Keep your eyes peeled for deer (who often make surprise appearances at campsites), scurrying fiddler crabs, curious raccoons, elegant egrets, and countless other creatures that call this place home. Dawn and dusk are particularly good times for wildlife spotting.
Bird watchers will find plenty to observe here. Vibrant Painted Buntings make their way through during spring migration, while resident barred owls fill the night with their distinctive hooting calls - and if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of them perched among the trees.
The park's interpretive center is definitely worth a visit. It houses fascinating exhibits about the area's natural and cultural history, including a massive 20-foot tall replica of a prehistoric giant sloth skeleton that was discovered right here on Skidaway Island back in 1822. You can also get up close with live local reptiles including snakes and turtles, check out the birding station complete with binoculars and reference books, or spend some time watching migrating birds through the observation window. During warmer months, you might even spot an alligator sunning itself in the marshes.
Accommodations
When it comes to staying overnight, Skidaway offers peaceful camping options. The campground is nestled under majestic live oaks draped with ethereal Spanish moss, with options including RV sites, tent sites, and cozy camper cabins. The campsites are generously spaced, giving you room to spread out with decent privacy from neighboring sites.
Planning a trip with friends? The pioneer campgrounds provide an even more secluded experience for larger groups. Around the park, you'll also find picnic areas with shelters that make for perfect gathering spots.
The comfort stations are clean and well-maintained, with hot showers available after a day of exploring. There are also laundry facilities if you're planning an extended stay.
Recreation
Beyond the excellent hiking, the park offers plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors. Three modern playgrounds are scattered around the grounds, keeping younger visitors entertained between nature explorations.
The trails work well for both hiking and biking, but cyclists should note that some sections have exposed tree roots that might require careful navigation. The Big Ferry Trail is a particular highlight, guiding you through diverse landscapes before revealing stunning marsh panoramas.
If you're looking to stay active during your visit, check out the outdoor exercise equipment in the dedicated fitness area. Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line with a valid Georgia fishing license.
Visitor Amenities
The welcome center houses a charming gift shop where you can browse clothing, local art, pottery, and pick up any camping supplies you might have forgotten. The center also regularly hosts nature programs and ranger-led activities that are worth checking out.
You won't have to completely disconnect during your stay - Wi-Fi service is available in designated areas across the park.
