About Aala Park in Honolulu
ʻAʻala Park is a 6.69-acre urban park located in the heart of Honolulu, Hawaii. Situated in the Kapālama Ahupuaʻa (traditional Hawaiian land division) of the Kona District of Oʻahu, the park has a rich history dating back to the early 1900s.
Once famed for its complex of Hawaiian fishponds and wetlands, ʻAʻala Park was built in the early 20th century and quickly became a bustling hub of activity. It served as a political rallying place, a site for ethnic festivals, and hosted community sports leagues. The park's prominence was enhanced by its proximity to the city's main train station, which was located across the street.
Over the years, ʻAʻala Park has faced various challenges, including safety concerns and underutilization. However, recent initiatives aim to revitalize the park and transform it into a vibrant, safe, and welcoming gathering space for the community.
The park is known for its mix of street elements, including stairs, rails, and ledges, which make it popular among skateboarders. It also features a basketball court, providing opportunities for sports activities.
Currently, efforts are underway to improve ʻAʻala Park through community-led design processes. The Trust for Public Land, in partnership with the University of Hawaiʻi Community Design Center, has engaged local residents in participatory design sessions to reimagine the park's future.
