Park Overview
Kolowalu Park is a 2.3-acre public park located in the Kakaako neighborhood of Honolulu, Hawaii. The park straddles a portion of Queen Street between Kamakee and Waimanu streets and is owned and operated by the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA).
Originally built in 2010, Kolowalu Park has undergone recent improvements to enhance its facilities and accessibility.
Layout and Design
The park features both mauka (mountain-facing) and makai (ocean-facing) sides, which are connected by a crosswalk and traffic island. The design incorporates elements that reflect the diverse Hawaiian history of the Kakaako area.
Cultural practitioners have been involved in creating features that honor local traditions and history, including specially designed fencing and gate systems.
Amenities and Facilities
In August 2024, the children's playground area underwent a significant renovation to create a state-of-the-art, inclusive playground that caters to a wider range of ages and abilities. This new playground is designed to encourage imagination, social skills development, and outdoor activity for children.
Recent improvements to the park include the installation of adult fitness equipment, picnic tables, and benches on the makai side. The park also includes a newly added dog park, offering a dedicated space for pet owners and their dogs.
Community Function
The park is designed to serve the growing "live, work, play" community in the area, providing a green space for residents and visitors alike.
Kolowalu Park serves as a community gathering space, hosting various events and activities throughout the year. Its central location in the urban core of Honolulu makes it an accessible green space for nearby residents and workers, contributing to the area's livability and community spirit.
