About Ada Park in Chicago
Ada (Sawyer Garrett) Park is a 16.65-acre recreational space located in the Morgan Park Community Area of Chicago, Illinois. Created in 1930, the park initially provided facilities for the neighborhood's expanding African-American population. The park's development was completed in stages, with final land acquisition occurring in 1955 and streets and alleys being vacated in 1957 to achieve its current size.
Originally known as Loomis Street Park, it was renamed Ada Park in 1934 by the Calumet Park District. The name honors Ada Sawyer Garrett (1856-1938), a significant figure in Chicago's urban development. Garrett sold a baseball park in the Logan Square neighborhood, which led to a development that would define that area.
The park has undergone several improvements over the years. By 1931, it featured a swimming pool and some landscape enhancements. After the Chicago Park District took control in 1934, additional recreational facilities were installed. A new bathhouse for the swimming pool was erected in 1940, with further expansions to the fieldhouse in 1957 and 1990.
Today, Ada Park serves as a vital community resource, offering a wide range of indoor and outdoor facilities. The park hosts various programs including seasonal sports, tumbling, and clubs for teens and seniors. During the school year, after-school programs are available, and in summer, the park runs a popular six-week day camp. The park also organizes special events, including family-oriented holiday celebrations throughout the year.
The park's advisory council meets quarterly, demonstrating ongoing community involvement in its management and development.
