About Algonquin Park
A Pocket of Play in Avondale
Positioned in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood sits Algonquin Park, a tiny urban oasis that proves good things really do come in small packages. At just 0.16 acres, this mini park might not be sprawling, but it offers a welcome breath of fresh air two blocks east of California Avenue and about 1.5 blocks north of Diversey.
The park has humble beginnings, starting life as a simple gravel playlot established by the City of Chicago back in 1949. The Chicago Park District took over in 1957, and the space has evolved over the decades, with a notable facelift in 1990 that introduced a softer, more kid-friendly playground surface.
What's in a Name?
If you're wondering about that distinctive name, there's a bit of history there. Originally known as Washtenaw Park (after its street address), it eventually received its current moniker to avoid mix-ups with another Washtenaw Park elsewhere in the city. The name Algonquin pays homage to the Native American tribes that once called this region home, adding a touch of historical significance to this neighborhood spot.
ADFriday Night Pizza Crawl - River North, Chicago
Based on the book, "Pizza City USA," this tour features three different styles of pizza in less than 3 hours. You'll meet some of the pizza makers behind the pies, learn about Chicago pizza history (and the greater city at large) plus discover a pair of places few locals even know about.
Small but Mighty Amenities
What Algonquin Park lacks in size, it makes up for in accessibility and safety. The star attraction is its playground area with a rubberized surface that's gentle on little knees and elbows. You won't find organized programs here, but that's part of its charm - it's simply a quiet, unassuming place where neighborhood kids can play and adults can enjoy a moment of calm amid the city bustle.
While it might not be a destination park that draws visitors from across Chicago, Algonquin Park serves its purpose beautifully: providing a safe, accessible play space for the surrounding community. Sometimes, that's exactly what a neighborhood needs.
