A Park with Steel Roots

Established in 1904, Bessemer Park pays tribute to Sir Henry Bessemer, whose revolutionary steelmaking process transformed the industry - a fitting nod to this area's deep connections with Chicago's historic steel mills. The U.S. Steel South Works, once Chicago's most productive steel mill, stood just one mile from the park, and naming it after Bessemer was a deliberate acknowledgment of the industry that defined this corner of the city.

Bessemer Park was created by the South Park Commission as part of a broader push to build neighborhood parks across the city. The system was conceived by park superintendent J. Frank Foster, who saw parks as essential breathing spaces for immigrant communities living in overcrowded conditions - places that could offer everything from public bathing facilities to organized recreation. The park's design was entrusted to two prominent firms: the Olmsted Brothers, the renowned landscape design practice, and Daniel H. Burnham and Co., the Chicago architectural firm, who together shaped the entire park system of which Bessemer was a part.

Today, this 20.27-acre green space in Chicago's South Chicago neighborhood offers sports facilities and peaceful garden nooks alongside all that history.
