About the Location

Urban Oasis in the South Loop

Situated in Chicago's Near South Side, Cotton Tail Park spreads across 2.35 acres of verdant space that feels like a breath of fresh air amid the city hustle. Dating back to 1990, this little haven came to life when the Dearborn Park Corporation generously donated the land to the Chicago Park District.

Tucked away within the Dearborn Park neighborhood and just a stone's throw from South Loop Elementary, this hidden retreat offers a peaceful escape right in the South Loop's heart. The park's landscape - crafted by in-house architects - features a central lawn encircled by walkways dotted with planters, lampposts, and benches where you can sit and watch the world go by. The charming name "Cotton Tail Park" became official in 1998, inspired by the cotton-tailed rabbits that call this place home and bring smiles to local children's faces.

Play and Relaxation Spaces

Kids have plenty of room to burn energy at the playground, which thoughtfully separates areas for different age groups. While the older children's section remains in good shape, the wooden equipment in the little ones' area could use some TLC. The playground's rubberized surface makes it accessible for everyone - a nice touch that shows community consideration.

Between the play areas stands a gazebo complete with tables, offering a shady retreat on sunny days. The open fields are well-suited for everything from impromptu soccer games to lazy Sunday picnics, making this park a go-to spot for families living nearby. If you're not a fan of walking on grass, no worries - a small paved path loops around the green space, ideal for a quick stroll.

Neighborhood Life

Four-legged friends are more than welcome at Cotton Tail Park, however they'll need to be kept leashed. You'll often see locals walking their dogs along the paths, enjoying fresh air together. Just remember to clean up after your pup, especially since kids are usually running around.

Thirsty? The park has drinking water fountains to keep you hydrated. While you won't find organized programs directly at Cotton Tail, the nearby Ping Tom Memorial Park offers plenty of structured activities just a short distance away.

Cotton Tail Park offers a nice balance of natural beauty and community space in the bustling South Loop. Its quiet setting makes it popular with residents, whether they're enjoying the scenery or simply passing through on their way to the local Mariano's.
