About Jackson Park
A Glimpse into History
Next to the shores of Lake Michigan on Chicago's South Side, Jackson Park stretches across a generous 551.5 acres of green space. The park was designed by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux back in the 1870s (yes, the same Olmsted behind New York's Central Park).
What really put Jackson Park on the map was hosting the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. This major event showcased American culture and technology through impressive architecture and art. You can still spot remnants of this grand event today, including the golden Statue of the Republic and the magnificent Museum of Science and Industry.

Natural Beauty to Explore
The park's landscape is wonderfully diverse - from serene lagoons to wooded areas and open fields great for soaking up some sun. For a moment of calm, head to Wooded Island and its Japanese strolling garden, formally known as the Garden of the Phoenix - though Osaka Garden remains in common use. Originally created for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, its pavilion design was modeled on the Phoenix Hall of the Byodo-in Temple in Kyoto, and the phoenix imagery was intentional: it referenced Chicago's rise from the ruins of the Great Fire of 1871. The garden features a koi pond and a tranquil layout, and was reconstructed after falling into disrepair during World War II, with the city of Osaka contributing funds toward its restoration.

Wooded Island isn't just pretty - it's alive with activity. Bird enthusiasts flock here (pun intended) to spot various species, with over 300 recorded in the area - including a population of feral monk parakeets descended from escaped pets. And if you time your visit right - late April to early May - you'll be treated to the cherry blossom trees in full bloom near the Museum of Science and Industry.

Play Your Heart Out
Jackson Park offers more than just scenery - there are many activities available. Golf, anyone? The park houses the first public golf course west of the Alleghenies, complete with a driving range for those looking to perfect their swing. There are also plenty of sports fields and playgrounds for the little ones to burn off energy.
When summer hits, the beach area becomes a hotspot for swimming and water activities. You'll come across lifeguards on duty, clean restrooms, and places to grab refreshments when hunger strikes.

For sports enthusiasts, take your pick from basketball courts, tennis courts, or try your hand at disc golf. The walking and biking trails throughout the park provide nice views of both the landscaped grounds and Lake Michigan.

Keeping It Green
Ongoing restoration projects aim to preserve Jackson Park for future generations. Local organizations are enhancing the natural areas in line with Olmsted's original vision, with a focus on biodiversity and sustainability.
The most significant change on the horizon is the Barack Obama Presidential Center, currently under construction within the park. Designed by New York-based Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, the complex centers on a 235-foot museum tower and will also include a branch of the Chicago Public Library, a great lawn, a children's play area, and several gardens. Ground was broken in September 2021, with the total project expected to cost around $830 million. Many of the park's recreational areas will remain accessible throughout and after construction.

Where Community Happens
Jackson Park functions as a community space with picnic areas scattered around the grounds, suitable for everything from family lunches to larger gatherings.
If you're into house music, you might already know about the Chosen Few Picnic, an annual festival that draws crowds from across Chicago. Year-round, the park hosts various seasonal programs and cultural events that showcase the rich diversity of Chicago's South Side communities.
