About the Location
A Touch of Baseball History
Named after the Leland Giants, an African-American baseball team that dominated the early 20th century scene, this park carries a piece of Chicago's rich baseball legacy. The Giants weren't just any team - they were a powerhouse in Black baseball, playing their games at 79th and Wentworth, just a short half-mile stroll from where the park stands today.
How the Park Came to Be
The story of this green space begins in 1973 when the Material Service Corporation gifted the land to the Chicago Park District. It wasn't until 1998 that it officially took on the name Leland Giants Park, honoring those legendary players. Since then, it's grown bit by bit - the City of Chicago added more land in 2001, and the Park District scooped up some adjacent private property in 2003.
