Location and Layout

Montgomery Ward Park stretches across about 3.1 acres along the north branch of the Chicago River in the River North neighborhood, and it tends to fly under the radar even for longtime Chicagoans. Locals often refer to it as a lesser-known park, which is a bit of a shame given the views it offers of the Chicago skyline and river.

It feels surprisingly secluded despite being right in River North - a peaceful escape from city life that doesn't ask much of you beyond showing up.

Children's Play Area

Kids have plenty to explore in the large playground with its modern, colorful equipment that works for children of all ages. It features rope net climbers, slides, swings, and interactive elements like marble mazes and musical instruments that encourage creative play.

Safety is clearly a priority here - the playground has a bouncy rubberized surface and is fully enclosed. When summer heat hits, the water spray feature with triple overhead sprinklers becomes the place to be for cooling down.

The fully fenced playground creates a secure space where parents can relax a bit while their kids play. Additional features include see-saws and small hills for climbing.

Montgomery Ward Park isn't just for children. Adults can take a stroll along the riverwalk promenade with its tree-shaded benches and views of the Chicago River and skyline.

The riverfront walking paths offer an excellent setting for unwinding after work or enjoying a leisurely weekend walk. While some areas could use more shade on sunny days, the overall vibe remains inviting and relaxed.

The park hosts outdoor movie nights, festivals, and family activities throughout the year.

The park offers open lawns and shaded seating areas suitable for picnics and casual get-togethers. Well-maintained pathways invite you to take a walk or morning jog, while plenty of benches around the park offer places to sit and take in your surroundings.

For the more active visitors, there's a versatile sports court that doubles as both a basketball court and soccer area.
