About the Location

Gateway to Navy Pier

Polk Bros Park, located at the entrance of Chicago's iconic Navy Pier, is a 13-acre urban green space that blends recreational, cultural, and architectural elements into a dynamic public area. Serving as the "front door" to the pier, the park is named in honor of the Polk family, whose $20 million donation facilitated its development.

The park is a central feature of the Navy Pier redevelopment, contributing to its mission of showcasing arts and community-based programming.

Interactive Water Feature

One of its standout elements is the Polk Bros Fountain and Plaza. This 12,500-square-foot interactive fountain features over 250 programmable jets designed to mimic natural movements such as waves, schools of fish, and flocks of birds.

During warm months, it becomes a favorite spot for families looking to cool off, while in winter, the fountain transforms into an ice rink, inviting year-round engagement. Surrounding the fountain are promenades and landscaped green spaces offering serene areas for relaxation.

Performance Spaces

The park also includes two expansive performance lawns—City Stage and Lake Stage—designed to host concerts, theater productions, and cultural events. City Stage faces west and features stepped seating for about 750 spectators, while Lake Stage faces east with a sloped lawn accommodating approximately 1,700 people.

Both stages are equipped with advanced sound and lighting systems, making them versatile venues for arts and entertainment.

Visitor Amenities

The Peoples Energy Welcome Pavilion, a 4,000-square-foot facility with amenities such as restrooms, seating, and a digital screen, serves as an arrival point for visitors. The pavilion's green roof and LED lighting underscore the park's commitment to sustainability.

The park regularly hosts free events, including jazz concerts, movie screenings, and Shakespeare in the Park performances, enriching the cultural life of Chicago.

Community Impact

Polk Bros Park successfully integrates creative landscaping, recreational spaces, and cultural programming, making it a vibrant addition to the city's public spaces. It is both a recreational haven and a cultural hub, offering something for locals and tourists alike.
