Natural Beauty

Located in Chicago lies River Park, a sprawling 28.8-acre oasis where the North Branch of the Chicago River meets the North Shore Channel. Here, nature and recreation blend together, offering both peaceful habitats and lively activity spaces.

The park is a genuine wildlife hotspot. Keep your eyes peeled for the majestic Black-Crowned Night Heron, turtles sunning themselves on logs, ducks and geese gliding across the water, and fish darting beneath the surface. Nature lovers will appreciate the six-acre natural area with its authentic native savanna, prairie, and riverside habitats. You can explore these natural wonders via mulch trails or paved paths. In summer, you can find mulberry trees with sweet fruits along certain trails.

Recreation Facilities

For those interested in activities rather than just relaxation, River Park offers plenty of options. The park features an artificial turf soccer field that stays usable even after rain, a running track, seven tennis courts for casual or competitive play, and two baseball diamonds. During busy times, you might even catch an ice cream vendor near the softball area - a wonderful reward after a game.

When Chicago's famous summer heat kicks in, cool off in the swimming pool or let the kids splash around at the interactive water playground. Looking for something different? The sand volleyball court offers a beach-like experience without the lake drive.

Trails and Pathways

River Park's network of bike paths and walking trails connects to the larger trail system along the North Shore Channel, popular with both cyclists and pedestrians. Whether you prefer the smooth ride of paved pathways or the more natural feel of mulched nature trails along the river, there's a fantastic route for your run, walk, or bike ride.

The paths offer some genuinely beautiful river views and glimpses of native plantings that change with the seasons. Dog owners, take note: your four-legged friends are welcome here, with a dedicated dog run area where they can socialize and burn off energy.

Community Programs

River Park offers various community programs and activities. Kids and teens can join after-school activities, leadership camps, basketball, and soccer programs that build skills and friendships.

Adults aren't left out either - basketball leagues and various events happen regularly in the park's substantial fieldhouse. The park's open spaces make it ideal for gatherings; on weekends, you'll often see families hosting picnics and birthday celebrations under the open sky.

RiverLab

One of the park's standout features is the RiverLab at River Park Boathouse, a special place dedicated to connecting people with the Chicago River. Here you can try canoeing, fishing, or participate in hands-on environmental education that fosters a deeper appreciation for our waterways.

You'll have public access to the boathouse and a free canoe launch - pretty rare finds in an urban setting. Water enthusiasts will appreciate observing where three small rivers (the Skokie, Middle Fork, and West Fork) converge before flowing into the Chicago River, creating a unique aquatic intersection.

History

River Park isn't a newcomer to Chicago's landscape. Established in 1920 and becoming part of the Chicago Park District in 1934, it carries a century-long legacy of serving the community. Today, it remains a space for unwinding, playing, and learning about the environment within the city.
