About the Location

Natural Wonders

Located in Joliet, Illinois, Lower Rock Run Preserve spans 372 acres of pure natural beauty. It's part of the broader Rock Run preservation system that protects over 1,450 acres of diverse habitats. Acquired over a 14-year period ending in 2003, this retreat offers access to a wonderful mix of ecosystems - from forests and prairies to savannas and wetlands, not to mention a lovely section of Rock Run creek.

The wildlife here doesn't disappoint either. Keep your eyes peeled for the northern water snake slithering by or the eastern kingbird perched overhead. Plant enthusiasts will appreciate spotting the delicate leather flower, floating white water lily, and vibrant prairie phlox. There's something incredibly restorative about spending time here - the quiet atmosphere makes it well-suited for a contemplative walk, a refreshing hike, or simply sitting and soaking in nature's beauty.

Getting Around

You've got two main ways to enter this natural playground: the I&M Canal Access area and the McClintock Road Access area. If you're looking to cover some serious ground, the I&M Canal entrance connects you to the extensive I&M Canal State Trail and the Rock Run Greenway Trail, which links up with the Joliet Junction Trail to create an impressive 16-mile loop of mostly paved pathways.

These trails work beautifully for hiking, biking, running, and even cross-country skiing when snow blankets the ground. In-line skating enthusiasts will find smooth surfaces for their wheels too. For a more rustic experience, head to the McClintock Road Access where natural surface trails await your hiking boots or running shoes. In winter, these paths transform into perfect routes for snowshoeing adventures. Don't miss the short detour to the lookout point - the views of the surrounding landscape are worth every step.

Trail Talk

The I&M Canal Trail features a nice mix of paved sections and hard-packed crushed limestone that meanders alongside the canal and river. You'll come across several parking areas at different access points, so starting your journey from various spots is a breeze.

While the trails are generally in good shape, be prepared for occasional patches of loose gravel or some grass growth, especially between Rockdale and Interstate 55. The scenic stops dotting the trail provide perfect opportunities to catch your breath and take in the natural beauty around you.

Amenities and Activities

Need a spot for a family gathering? The I&M Canal Access area offers a clean, shady picnic shelter that can accommodate up to 60 people (just remember you'll need a permit to reserve it). The spacious picnic area provides a great backdrop for creating memories with loved ones.

If fishing is more your speed, you can find plenty of spots along the canal and river to cast your line. Geocaching enthusiasts can also get their fix here with the proper permits. And yes, there are restroom facilities - outhouse style, but clean and well-maintained.

For the Dogs

Dog owners, rejoice! The McClintock Road Access features a 7.5-acre off-leash dog park where your four-legged friends can run free. There's even a special enclosure for smaller pups under 35 pounds. Note that you'll need a permit to enter, so plan ahead. The park is divided into three fenced areas, with one specifically for the smaller canines. Water is available for thirsty dogs, but you should bring your own container for them to drink from. As always, please clean up after your furry companions to keep the park pleasant for everyone.

The Experience

Lower Rock Run Preserve is a peaceful retreat within a diverse and ecologically rich setting. It's a natural fit for outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, cyclists, pet owners, and families looking to disconnect from screens and reconnect with nature. The trails are particularly fantastic for mountain biking adventures or leisurely strolls along the picturesque canal. While the preserve generally feels safe and tranquil, some regular visitors recommend bringing a buddy rather than exploring solo - always good advice when venturing into nature.
