About the Location
Natural Landscape
Originally a savanna habitat, this site has undergone several transformations over the decades—from farm to golf course, and finally into the 130-acre park it is today. Managed by the Peoria Park District, Donovan Park serves as an urban oasis, providing a serene environment for visitors to enjoy nature, art, and outdoor activities.
The park's commitment to ecological conservation is reflected in its designation as an ArbNet Level 1 Arboretum. The grounds are adorned with a variety of trees, including old-growth white oaks estimated to be over 230 years old.
Trails and Recreation
Trails wind through restored prairie landscapes and open fields, inviting walkers, cyclists, and cross-country skiers during the winter months. Adjacent to the Rock Island Greenway, the park is also a gateway for regional trail enthusiasts.
The park offers three fishing ponds and picnic areas equipped with tables and grills, making it perfect for outdoor leisure activities.

Stargazers can visit the Northmoor Observatory, operated by the Peoria Astronomical Society, which offers seasonal stargazing events from May to October.
