Originally, this land served as the Winnebago County Agricultural Fairgrounds and hosted events such as fairs and baseball games in the mid to late 19th century. The grounds were home to the Forest Citys, a professional baseball team, during the inaugural season of the National Association in 1871.
Over time, the area transitioned from its agricultural and sporting roots to become a public park under city ownership after 1904.
